Should the Celtics try to extend Kanter before the season ends and not risk him leaving in free agency?

He’s been playing very well..in the  Last 10 games, he’s averaging 12ppg, 11rpg, and 1blk, in 20mpg.  His PER is 24.8

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

I don't know if you can extend him right now, but at the MLE (so ~9-10M a year), I'd re-sign Kanter to maybe another 2 year deal after this. I say that as I believe he has a player option for next year at 5M.

Yup, the best deal we could do is have him opt out and give him a multi-year MLE deal at around $9.5 million per. I would be good paying the best backup center in the league that.

I think for the full MLE we can get a starting center. Can’t we give Kanter multi year contract starting at 120% his current salary ?

That would be my preferred option as well (unless we can get a starting level center for Theis+rookie contracts)
I'm bitter.

Does anyone think Kanter could possibly opt into his player option next season if he's satisfied with the team? He's said in the past that one of the things he's always looked for in an organization is one that could act as a sort of surrogate family. So...that might be a possibility.

Maybe.

Probably not.

If he’s opting in - might as well offer him the 20% raise over 2-3 yrs

I hope we do. Like Nick said, best backup center in the league.

Whether that’s MLE or him opting in, I want him to say
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

This could be Kanter's last big contract  opportunity so I expect he tries FA one more time.

My hope is Timelord gets healthy and develops enough to take over Theis' 24 MPG starting role while Kanter backs him up the other 24 MPG.

That won't be happening this year nor next year.  Theis has shown he's a valuable rotation player - more than Timelord so far.

Maybe the full MLE will bring Baynes back in green?
Next option would be Tristan
I’m starting to sour on Drummond. I checked on DBB blog and Their fans are terrified by the idea he may pick up his players option. I wouldn’t offer him the MLE next year

I would say close to a zero percent chance considering how much money some very average players are earning in the league. If $9-10 million per year is all they can offer, I doubt he stays. He’s only 27 and someone will pay him if he keeps playing the way he has been.

I don't think that's likely. I think he's likely topping out at the non-tax payer MLE this offseason. (so a 9.5 million dollar deal)

We will have to see if one of the few cap space teams wants him and can beat that sort of deal. Most of the cap space teams don't seem like a great fit for him so I could see him returning to the C's on some sort of new deal though I wouldn't count on it.
