  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
Since Bobby Jones was taken, and I have no prepared post for the guy, I'll just go simple.

For pick 7.8, the Detroit Pistons selects tough nosed, hard as nails, super competitor, Alonzo Mourning.

I might actually start him over Dikembe.
There is the guy I was talking about.
Yeah, I think he was probably a better overall player than Wallace, but as I explained, for a bench role I wanted the best defender (Ben), the best rebounder (Ben), and a guy that could legitimately play at PF (Ben).  So it was an easy call for me to select Ben over Zo.
Ben is a much better fit for your team and Yoki already had that defensive specialist big man, so Mourning is a much better fit for him as a two way player in his starting unit. Mourning's 99 and 00 seasons were spectacular given the physicality of the time. Probably the games best defender those two years and maybe the 2nd best player in the league those years. Tough to find that in the 7th round.

How stupid will I have to be to start Zo at PF instead of the Big E?

I must say, if I can get my guy with my next pick my team is going to be looking super good.

Right now its a defensive nightmare of a starting lineup and an absolute mismatch off the bench.  I have by far and away the largest and most skilled bench IMO of any team, and I dont think anyones starters right now compare to mine defensively either.

PG:Payton
SG: Kobe

PF: Debuscherre
C: Hakeem

Insane defense, hustle, heart and offensive capabilities.

bench

PG: Penny (6 foot 8)
SG:
SF: Hedi (6 foot 11)
PF:
C: Yao 97 foot 6)

HUGE long bench.

With the 7(9) pick in the historical draft the Spurs select one of the most tenacious defenders of all time.

A man who managed to gobble rebounds like few others could, and whose defense was second to none.

Arguably the greatest defender to ever man the PF spot (absolutely top 3) and one of the hardest workers the league has ever seen. His defense is likened to Denis Rodman, before there was the worm. He routinely defended the opposing teams best forward and made life for them a nightmare.

His offense was better than Rodmans and could go for 20 on any given night. He had the ability to get hot from deep, but most of his offense cam from an uncanny ability to read the play and make sneaky cuts to the rim.

with the 7(9) pick the spurs select their starting PF: the big D

Dave Debusschere
TP lol.
While I like the pick and have massive respect for DeBusschere, the hyperbole on his defense is a bit much. Great pick. Excellent 7th round value. Not buying the hyperbole. But really like the pick.

Actually a pretty smart move, Mourning was basically a smaller and meaner poor man's Ewing. I'd like the efficiency boost.

C:  David Robinson
PF: Bob McAdoo
SF: Scottie Pippen, Rick Barry
SG: Mitch Richmond, Allen Iverson
PG: Lebron James

Would love to hear some feedback on this team so far
I think Lebron at the point is a terrible idea.  Running the offense through him, great idea, having him actually be a full time PG, I just don't see working.  I don't think he can defend any PG in this game (at least consistently) and I don't think his ball handling is good enough against PG's guarding him (again consistently).  I get why in theory you might think that will work, but I think it will be a disaster, especially in this with the greatest PG's of all time on the other teams.  I'm also not sure about Iverson and Barry being the primary bench players.  They both were very ball dominant and had a ton of teammate related issues (Pippen also didn't get along well with teammates, and Lebron is a unique personality).  There is a lot of pressure on Robinson to keep that team together.

2013 LeBron was at his athletic peak and could guard pretty much anyone. Plus he's proven you can run an offense through him, and Pippen can (as he also has in the past) handle some ball handling and playmaking duties. Pippen also managed to get along with MJ enough to win 6 titles, so I have no doubt he can handle Lebron. These guys don't have to like each other to win, and most of these guys have won titles. Plus Iverson can flat out score, so I love him as a 6th man with Barry getting much more open shots in the modern 3 point era.

Plus, as far as matchups are concerned, no point guard is guarding LeBron effectively.
Gotta agree with Moranis. I love LeBron as your point forward. Let him be your offensive initiator and floor general but have him doing it from a forward position and have a space creating three point shooting PG to open the floor.

I don't like when people try to recreate the wheel in these games.

LeBron shouldn't be playing point. Hakeem isn't a PF and neither is Alonzo Mourning.

Would love to hear some feedback on this team so far

I am not a McAdoo fan. He had his best years as an undersized center and was not able to replicate those performances when he played at PF.

I would have been tempted to play LeBron at PF and Pippen at PG with Pippen initiating the offense but LeBron taking over from there.

I liked the idea of taking another SF and I like Barry individually but I am not sure he was the right man for the team collectively. I love his talent. He was closest thing to Larry Bird the league has seen. But he was a difficult teammate in his earlier years and even in his later team orientated years he had difficulties with his PGs because he wanted the ball all the time and to be one that made the key passes. So I have trouble imaging him getting along with LeBron given how LeBron plays.

I love LeBron and David Robinson. Fantastic combination.

Not sure about Pippen. Great player. Not sure he is as good as robin to LeBron's batman as he was with MJ. Different style of play (MJ and LeBron) and I think different style of robin might have worked better. With LeBron, always, I think of shooters and off ball players rather than a do-it-all playmaking SF.

Not to say Pip and Bron couldn't work but that is part of the reason why I would be tempted to move LeBron to PF and play Pip at PG. Get more shooting on the floor. More space for a dribble drive based offense. No PG. Let Pip be the main PG to get him involved early. Play up tempo. Run as much as possible. Try to run teams off the court.

I like Mitch Richmond. Good player. Plays both ends. He could work well with LeBron especially in a more up tempo offense.

Not sure about Iverson. Another guy who over-dribbles. Tough fit with LeBron there while keeping all these other stars happy / involved in the offense. Iverson is so much fun though.

---------

I think Robinson and LeBron do enough heavy lifting (and to a lesser degree Pippen) to make this team competitive but I am not sure the fit is right with the rest of the pieces to put this team in contention with teams like Philly or Chicago.

I just think it is a terrible idea.  Lebron James is not a point guard.  He has never been a point guard.  And there is no way I would waste the greatest small forward to ever play, by playing him at point guard.  You move lesser players to new positions (if you move anyone), you don't move your best player.

And I think you are overestimating how hard it will be for PG's to guard Lebron.  The PG's in the 80's did ok guarding Magic, who was bigger than Lebron, and who unlike Lebron spent his entire life handling the ball and managing point guard duties and responsibilities.  Lebron has no where near the handle of Magic.

It's your team to manage as you see fit, but since you asked for opinions, I gave mine and there is no way I'd play Lebron at the point.

I don't like Alonzo (PF) next to Dikembe (C). If you had a more capable offensive player at center, I think Alonzo could work at PF.

For now though, I think Elvin Hayes (PF) and Alonzo (C) is your best big man combination with Dikembe off the bench.

I like DeBusschere taking over from Yao as a starter. I think that helps your team a lot. I am sure DeBusschere would be dropping a few 3s in today's league.

The fit reminds me of Horry and Olajuwon in 1995 only DeBusschere is a much better rebounder than Horry so that team weakness wouldn't exist here as it did with those Rockets teams.

I love the spacing DeBusschere creates for Olajuwon and Bryant to go one-on-one and for Payton to drive. The paint was too clogged with Yao in there for Olajuwon, Bryant and Payton to make the most of their offensive gifts.

all defensive 1st team in teh first 6 years of its awarding.

Would have had more if the award came out earlier.

even NBA.com calls him one of the greatest defenders in the history of the game.

most sites have him as a top 5 all time PF and top 5 alltime sf for defense.

Thanks, I was hoping to get Rodman as my PF earlier on, but after I missed him I was looking for defense and floor spacing at that spot, and there really wasnt anyone in the game that was much better at both than Dave.
