Is it possible that Ainge is creating some space to sign Cheick Diallo. I'd be a fan of this move if so. I really wanted him to go after two of Cauley Stein, O'Quinn, Noel or Tyson Chandler (all of whom signed for $2 mil or less) for more depth up front but based on where we are if Ainge signed this guy it might help. He's 23 years old and looks like he can play. Maybe a good fit age wise and with some upside - could he start for us at PF? 6'9" 220 with a 7'4" inch wingspan. Some stats from on him here:

The Celtics are still re-signing Theis to the deal that was reported a couple of weeks ago.  They rescinded his qualifying offer due to cap constraints.  They are just maneuvering to make the numbers work.

Theis has yet to sign a contract with the Celtics and became an unrestricted free agent Monday after the team rescinded its qualifying offer, Chris Grenham of NESN.com reports.

Theis agreed to terms with Boston on a reported two-year, $10 million deal earlier this month, but he never officially re-signed with the team when the moratorium period ended July 6. With Boston still trying to maximize its remaining available cap space, the decision to pull Theis' qualifying offer is merely a procedural move. The Celtics are still expected to honor their agreement with Theis, though it's theoretically possible that his availability on the open market prompts other teams to engage him in contract discussions.

I don't think this is news yet. I would be very surprised if Daniel Theis is not on the Cs this upcoming season.

Think you're right on Celtics wanting Theis. He can play in the NBA. He knows the team and is really good in the locker room....he's pretty cheap for a vet too.

His contract is needed for potential trades anyway...right?

Qualifying offer and offering the contract they did aren’t really related. Theis is with us for 2 years.

Isn't Diallo just a poor man's Faried?

Why not sign Faried instead?

You got it. We're going to direct him into the entrance door only to re-direct him out the exit door. They should set up a revolving door outside the players entrance of the Gahden.

If that is the only reason, then it's odd that they stretched Yabu's $3.1M contract. Not only was he not a minimum contract - which would have been great in a trade - but we now have his contract on our books for the next 3 years.

The reason might have been because Poirier required more money than the minimum, but still surprising nonetheless.

I would rather have Daniel than any of those mentioned

Yeah, I would be surprised if we got Diallo, he is not a big upgrade over Theis and may in fact, be a downgrade.

Theis is with the team, as others have said.

As for Diallo and Faried, one of the skillsets you really don't want to have in the NBA today is the offensive game of a pure center without the size or strength to defend centers or protect the rim in a 4 out system.  That's where Diallo and Faried are at.  I don't think they really have a place in the modern NBA.

Yeah, I think this was just a timing and procedural move to assure everyone, including Theis, was able to sign their already agreed to deals. Really nothing to see here. Theis is getting his $10 million over the next two years from Boston.

Theis is getting $10 million/2 years!!!

He is a frickin' 3rd string center!

What a waste

Look around the league, that number is very similar to others.  At times he could be 2nd string, or even start.

Theis was our backup last year and he was a liability.

He is a 3rd stringer. Too weak physically. Too easily overpowered. A middling defender. A sub-par rebounder. And not productive enough offensively to make up for it. That makes him a very good 3rd stringer but out of his depth as a primary backup center.
