Yeah, I think this was just a timing and procedural move to assure everyone, including Theis, was able to sign their already agreed to deals. Really nothing to see here. Theis is getting his $10 million over the next two years from Boston.

Theis is getting $10 million/2 years!!!

He is a frickin' 3rd string center!

What a waste
I am not sure he is worth $5 million a year but it becomes a nice salary filler to use in a trade and right now, first bigs off the bench usually get more than that. And right now Theis is probably first big off the bench, though that is more an indictment on the bigs on this team, but it is what it is.

I have no problem with Theis making just $5 million a year when I think we got a bit of a bargain with Kanter getting just $5 million a year too. I think he is more a guy that is worth MLE money, so got him on a bargain, IMHO.

$5 million for a guy who can hit threes and also credibly defend 4s and 5s is pretty reasonable.

Theis isn't great shakes at any of those things, but that combination of skills gets you at least a few million a year in the NBA.

Look around the league, that number is very similar to others.  At times he could be 2nd string, or even start.

Theis was our backup last year and he was a liability.

He is a 3rd stringer. Too weak physically. Too easily overpowered. A middling defender. A sub-par rebounder. And not productive enough offensively to make up for it. That makes him a very good 3rd stringer but out of his depth as a primary backup center.

As PF I think Theis is an okay allround back-up. Would like to see Theis/Kanter together a lot, very complementary.

Even in the modern NBA it's not easy to find a big that has 62%(TS%), 35%(3P%), 10.4%(OFFREB%) and 0.18(WS/48). Theis has had it's ups and downs, but he has been very productive. I have no issues with his new contract.

I agree with this. He is pretty good at rolling to the basket too. He doesn't have the upside of some guys, but he is a solid NBA player. He will also be the only big who can shoot threes on this team this year.

Didn’t Theis play hurt most of last year?  I thought his rookie season was better.

What do you think of Theis at the PF position?  We are going to need some minutes there.  When we play small ball it will be one of our wings otherwise maybe Grant Williams and Theis?  I see can him playing alongside Kanter, Poirier, or R Williams, and against the smaller teams he can play some center.

Theis was beasting his first year, especially beasting when he went down with injury.  Hurt the C's against the Cavs a lot!  (along with Shane Larking going down).

So, they're hoping that that healthy version of Theis is what they'll see this year.  A good backup PF/C

As a PF, I'd rate him as a below average backup (bottom 1/3rd) of primary backup PFs to a high quality 3rd string center. Again similar to the center position.

Just not skilled enough to be more than that. PFs contribute more to the offense than Theis does in terms of ball-handling, passing, shooting and overall scoring. Theis doesn't give you much ball-handling. Passing is decent but marginal. Shooting percentages are good but low volume. Same with scoring. Defensively, he is middling. He doesn't get pushed around but he isn't quick enough to be more than a mediocre defender on quicker more skilled PFs he faces.

Guys who are bottom 1/3rds of main backup bench player to high level 3rd stringers should only be earning the minimum. That is all they are worth.

i believe the salary is meant less for a third string center than to help provide trade salary balance later on. ainge has done this before, overpay someone for this purpose.

Yeah, he was really the only player we were able to go above the cap to sign for more than the minimum. With the waiving of Yabu, Theis' contract becomes even more important. But it's not like he is WAY overpaid or anything. $5M is still pretty reasonable even if he stays with us for the duration. Having there be no team option on the 2nd year makes this a distinct possibility.

I think Danny had to beat out whatever European contract Theis was offered. There was some reporting from the beat guys he was looking to move back to Europe after a pretty miserable year in Boston.

I bet Europe seemed preferable to basically everybody on the roster after last season.

Most bits are preferable to Boston even if you're not a world class athlete from a different country.

Maybe he signed with the understanding that they would trade him but he would be getting paid.  Then when no trade happened just like Yabuselle he was unnecessary.   If he ends up not coming back that would open two roster spots.   Maybe the Marketing department asked Danny to do them a solid and find a way to sign Tacko.  Theis is third string Center or power forward at best, so I wouldn't expect a lot of minutes for him, unless the French guy sucks  Tatum and Williams are ahead at PF and Kanter and  Poirier are ahead at C.  Plus the TimeLord needs some playing time.

Is it possible that Ainge is creating some space to sign Cheick Diallo. I'd be a fan of this move if so. I really wanted him to go after two of Cauley Stein, O'Quinn, Noel or Tyson Chandler (all of whom signed for $2 mil or less) for more depth up front but based on where we are if Ainge signed this guy it might help. He's 23 years old and looks like he can play. Maybe a good fit age wise and with some upside - could he start for us at PF? 6'9" 220 with a 7'4" inch wingspan. Some stats from on him here:

Thoughts?

I would rather have Daniel than any of those mentioned

I thought this was super crazy comparing Theis to WCS, but actually their Per36 numbers are fairly similar. Thing is WCS was willing to sign for the small MLE to have a chance at an early career ring..
