TP to the OP for using “flying” in the thread title for Javonte Green.

Man, he does fly. I like him too....just no room.

It's always nice to see a player like Green have a good summer league. He certainly is showing some bounce and a high motor. He'll get a job somewhere. Probably overseas again.

I certainly don't expect to see him on the Celtics roster. He's 26 years old, 6'4". He's not going to take minutes away from Smart, Brown, or Hayward. I also wouldn't give him any minutes that could be used for Langford's development.

This is his second summer league. He played last summer for Phoenix and didn't make that team.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Green looks to be a serviceable player, but as others have mentioned, his age puts a ceiling on his potential. Even if he might be better than other guys at the very end of the roster, NBA teams put a premium on what could be. We have already signed Wanamaker, Theis, and Poirier as older players with little-no NBA experience (not so much in Theis' case, but once upon a time...) so there's only so much we can do with so many rookies, as well.

If Green was given a real opportunity, I believe he could be a rotation bench player on a non-contending team. There are a lot of talented individuals out there; unfortunately not all of them are destined for NBA prime time (even if some are more deserving than others - see Yabu, James Young, Fab Melo, etc).

Isn't a player like Green stuck?

Signing a two way puts him end of bench somewhere, perhaps being subjected to G league shifts. Really hoping for injuries to starters.

Or

Getting pretty darn good pay and a starter's role in Europe.

He as been all over the court this year doing his best Dionte Christmas imitation. Christmas has been signed and waived by 4 NBA teams while playing euro for 7 years.

Easy to root for guys who have both talent and effort on display.

Don't see a place for him here. The guard and wing positions will be filled with players with much more talent and upside. Maybe this gets him a two way contract somewhere else. Would be nice to see him rewarded for his hard work so far this summer.

Yesterdays highlights

He is an older rookie (25)

6'4 and looks like has a long wingspan. Built body

Now with Yabu waived... I wonder if Danny secures Green

Highlights from last nights game. Dunkathon

The C's want guys with IQ who can defend and follow Brad's system.  If Green has that then he could fit nicely as a bench player, but only if the Celtics are planning on trading one of the stud wings in a deal for a big.

The athleticism is there obviously.

I love what I see in Summer league .

But we already have Brown , who can do this stuff in real games and against the best players in the league .

Brown > Green

At this rate, I feel that Green will be one of the SL players that will be signed

His game/style looks comparable to Jaylen Brown

He will be given a camp invite but there is no way I see that he is earning a roster spot. Maybe his play gets him a contract elsewhere. That would be a cool reward for his good play.
