Another season with too many players signed and not enough roster spots open. This happened a few years ago and is about to happen again. That will be the case, unless there's a trade in the works we are not privy to.
This roster overload sometimes has been a problem at the trading deadline too...although not so much lately, i.e., their roster would be full while other teams, with roster room, could sign impact players. He's gotten better in this regard. But, why is it happening in the first place?
Unless I'm mistaken the Celtics have already signed Wanamaker, Theis and Poirier, Ojeleye and Yabusele for the 2019-2020 season. Will any of them be major contributors? Obviously, we don't know about Poirier. But judging from past performances, the rest will be fair, not great.
In hindsight should Danny have made these signings given the influx of impressive draftee showings in Summer League? Not only have the draft picks played well, the invitees also look like keepers.
For example, Tacko's been unbelievable! Surely he'll go down as one of the Celtics all-time fan favorites should Danny sign him. (Please sign him Danny!!!) Besides Carsen, Waters has looked great and a keeper in my mind. And, in my opinion, Green might be another gem. (No, I haven't forgotten Grant.)
Had this been a one time thing I'd be okay with this logjam. However, it's appears to be an ongoing issue that should not keep happening.
Maybe Danny's stuck between a rock and a hard place. If he leaves spots open and the draftees turn out to be duds, then what?
Being a couch potato GM everything is so much clearer with the aid of 20/20 hindsight. Or, maybe there's something to be said about my observations and Danny might take heed in the future.
