Not much of a chance. Siakam, with his length, would've eaten us alive. And I'm sure VanVleet would've torched us too. This is not even considering what Leonard would've done.
Which brings me to the Celtics aversion for length. Apparently they could have drafted this guy, but went in a different direction. Ainge seemed to go for length picking Williams, but he never got a real shot to fill their gaping need for a paint defender.
Which leads me to wonder if Ainge is on the same page as Stevens on the subject of length. As I recall, Ainge said personnel decisions are made jointly by him and Stevens. Was that the case here?
That bothers me. I still see Robert Williams able to become a quality rim protector like Myles Turner. He just needs to get the time and trust of his coach. Turner is a better free throw shooter and is able to stretch the floor (even from 3), but Williams is a better rebounder and passer.
Enough with all the small ball stuff. We see that it doesn't work anymore. All the topteams play with two bigs or at least an elite center (example: Embiid) in their starting/most used line-ups.
Toronto: Siakam + Gasol/Ibaka
Golden State: Green + Cousins/Looney
Milwaukee: Giannis/Mirotic + Lopez
Portland: Aminu/Leonard + Kanter/Collins
Philadelphia: Harris + Embiid
Houston: Tucker + Capela
Denver: Millsap + Jokic/Plumlee
and
Boston: Morris + Horford/Baynes
From all the teams that won a playoff series this year, the Celtics have by far the smallest front court.
