Compete for what though!?! A championship! ?!? No not this year. If you think the lineup of Rondo, Bradley, Green, Olynyk and Bass is gonna bring a ring then you haven't seen the Miami Heat, Pacers and Knicks play, they have a superstar. Our lineup is young and is full of POTENTIAL. RR is a perennial all star but his game doesn't translate to taking over and winning games on his own. His game is to make OTHERS better and with what we have to offer rightnow isn't championship worthy.

Rondo's taken over and won plenty of games, especially in the playoffs.

Since Rondo's version of "taking over" is passing to teammates who then make their field goals, who do you see him passing to to win plenty more?

Rondo does take over by passing much of the time, he also does with his scoring and rebounding at times. But if the last 6-7 years are a guide he'll pass the ball to whoever's on the court with him.

He can take over. Take Game 2 of the ECF in 2011 where he scored 44 points. I am still mad at the refs for handing Miami that win.

Are we still really debating whether or not this team would be better with Pierce and KG???

I don't see anyone in the last few posts that has alluded to anything having to do with this.

The only assertions that have been made is to contest the opinion that this team keeping Pierce and KG wouldn't be able to compete any longer, and using our last playoffs performance as the basis for that assertion.

I´m not using the last playoffs as the basis for that assertion. I called exactly this, and I called it years in advance. Decline doesn´t happen over night, the writing was on the wall for years already.

If I recall correctly, you said we would make the finals even after Rondo went down. I think your ability to project this team´s success is questionable, at best.

I think you still have not analyzed our ECF run in 2012 correctly. We were extremely lucky.
We had absolutely no business playing in that ECF on quality alone. Key players of our opponents went down at just the right time, and our guys showed the fighting spirit they were known for their whole career, but in the end, the clearly superior team won.

By all accounts, even the Celtics brass seems to share this opinion nowadays, or why else would they trade KG and Pierce after "one bad playoff series", as you insist?

You can accuse fans on the internet of being fickle and get away with it, but you can´t say the same about the Celtics´ FO without looking delusional, in my opinion.

In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

Rebuilding sucks. I hope all you rebuild fanatics are happy now.

If we are lucky we might contend in five years.

No free agents are signing here unless we overpay.

Lottery here we come hurray.

I preferred the get Rondo, Barbosa, Sully healthy. sign Steamer and run it back option.

Dude, we aren't contending for 5 years anyway! Keeping KG and Pierce and adding Steamer and Barbosa is a contending team?!?!? Wow, that's a dream land. That's a 45 win team and a 1st round loss - no question. At best.

DA wants us to be a REAL contender again, not the Milwaukee Bucks for the next 5yrs, pretending to be contenders because we're in the playoffs.

I do not know you have a short memory or what?! This team one season before that, during 2011-12, reached at finals of East Conference being 3-2 over MIMAI HEAT. So, this team has absolutely power with KG and PP, plus Rondo, Terry, Ray etc to be a real contender. This team had necessity to add a big centre like Dwight Howard and maybe another good sniper like JJ Redick to beat HEAT and get a championship. You are creating a false imagination about the real facts.

Add a player like Dwight Howard and some good talented roleplayers. Yeah i agree; that would be awesome. We'd definitely contend with Rondo, Bradley, Green, Pierce, Garnett , Howard and a good bench. How would this happen though ? This doesn't work for so many reasons; not the least of wich are cba rules; the fact that it's hard to get assets without giving them up (especially for a city like boston).

Everyone here would love that option; we're all on the same page in that. But it just can't happen. Losing Pierce and Garnett hurts, i know. When i found out it was like a real, physical nauseating pain. But we accept, we move on and we look to the future and we'll be happy to have you once you join us.

Oh right!!  How foolish am I?!??  Dwight Howard could come to Boston to play for a pot of our delicious baked beans!!! But, why stop at Redick? I'm sure the Heat would agree to let Lebron make the trip north as well!  For Bass and Jet and fodder to make the salaries match. We could throw in a pick as well!!!  And why haven't the Patriots gotten Adrian Peterson yet?!?! They could be REALLY good if they were only oh-so-clever enough to just ask nicely for the best players to magically appear in their uniforms.

Why does it feel like it's a bandwagon fan moaning every time someone cries about having to rebuild?

A healthy Rondo is a top fifteen player in the league.  Less than half the teams in the league can say they have one of those.  I don't know where I'd place Green, but he's a pretty good second best guy.  I have every reason to believe that our rookie and our sophomore can be near the top their respective draft classes.  Avery Bradley is still young and has gone from scrub to superstar back to scrub quicker than anyone I've ever seen.  This might be the year that we finally find out who he really is.  Throw in the likes of Lee, Bass, Wallace, and Humphries--all solid pros--and a new coach who just could end up making this whole thing work, and I think this team on paper looks like it has a decent shot of being a playoff team.
