  • Another undersized Celtic...
Why give up one of the best defensive big men in the game? So what if he can't score. We need a guy like Perk, and he's still very young. He may be injured, but he'll just come back stronger--what else will he have to do besides workout and watch film?

I actually do have a problem with the fact that Perk can't score.  People seem very content about our future with Perk at center.  Over the past 3 years, Perk has been a phenomenal defensive stalwart in the paint for us.  We have been very successful because he hasn't needed to score and does his role superbly.  The reason he hasn't had to score is because he's surrounded by Rondo and 3 future HOF'ers who all have been able to score 23+ ppg for multiple seasons in their careers.  That is a true rarity.

Looking forward, he will have the same point guard, who indeed should improve.  But, there is large doubt that he will have 3 bonafide scorers at his side though.  Rondo is never going to be a bonafide scorer, he may reach 20 ppg on a contending team which would be his ceiling.  Perk might sniff 10 ppg a few times.  Without 3 other premier scorers (like I said are very difficult to obtain), I think this team might be too offensively challenged to contend perennially.  Look at how our team struggled midseason with just 1 of our stars out or playing hurt.

Look how the Celtics struggled and ultimately lost the Games 6 & 7 without Perk. Scoring is important, but the C's have proven that defense wins championships, and with no one to guard two big men in the paint--we lost. No matter how this team shapes up in the future, there will always be a need for role players, and people who are willing to for go the glamorous stats like scoring and double doubles to do the things nobody else wants to do. All 5 starters do not need to avg 20 pts a game to win, if they have to do that, your team has a problem. One thing I'd like Perk to really improve on is his FT%, other than that he was a close second in fg% in the league for the season--if you need Perk to score a bunch of points, than your supporting cast (i.e. Shooting guard, the title speaks for itself) needs to be upgraded.

i couldn't agree more.  Perk doesn't need to be a premier scorer on the block in order to help facilitate the offense.  If he shot better from the free throw line it would prevent teams from playing "hack a perk", the same can be said for Rondo.  Perk is basketball's version of Ozzie Smith.  He may not drive in a lot of runs, but he proves his value in how many runs he saves.
