Right, I mean the more pitching the better, but I just don't think it needs to be the primary need on this team right now. You have Beckett, Lester, Dice-K, Buchholz and Wakefield, I am assuming that is your rotation going into the season unless an injury occurs. Where does Lackey fit? I understand going after a guy like Ben Sheets, but not Lackey. I also prefer Holliday over Bay. If bay wants the same money as Holliday, the sox need to let Bay walk.
If they trade Buchholz for a bat, though, there's still a hole in the pitching staff. Plus, they need to be concerned about future seasons, too; Wakefield is old, and isn't Beckett a free agent soon?
They definitely need to upgrade the lineup significantly, but the pitching staff could use some work, too.
Well, the problem is that they have a much bigger need in the middle of the order than they do at the top of the rotation. If Beckett, Lester, and Dice-K pitch how they are supposed to, the Sox can fill in the rest of the rotation with Wakefield, and a couple decent veterans. There are actually a good number of talented pitchers out there, its just that most of them are coming off injuries.
Ultimately, I don't like looking it as pitching versus hitting. I like to look at it as trading for a 32 year old All-Star with a TON of miles on his arm, or trading for a guy in his mid 20's.
I just have a lot of concerns about Halladay breaking down at some point in the next few years.
