This 'two player draft' thing is draft analyst garbage talk, especially considering Simmons and Ingram are not Towns, Lebron, or Duncan like at all. Oden was also a guaranteed superstar too right? There will certainly be all-stars outside of the top 2, and there is a significant chance that one or both of the top 2 will be busts. GMs know this, it is how pretty much all drafts go.
Heck, Ainge almost gave away our stash of picks for Justice Winslow last year, which itself was crazy, AND MJ turned it down, for Kaminsky , which is even crazier! And you know what? Neither of those two players were ever rated as top tier in the draft 'experts' analysis. GMs laugh at those analyses, their actions show that clearly.
The two player draft thing is not garbage talk, and your comparisons to Towns, Lebron and Duncan, as well as your inclusion of Oden, actually make the point.
Towns - #1 overall
Lebron - #1 overall
Duncan - #1 overall
Oden #1 overall, career destroyed by injuries, followed by Durant at #2
It's the reality of the draft. The monster prospects are gone quickly, if they even exist in a given year. This year doesn't have the monster prospects that would have driven a Simmons or Ingram down lower. It's a 2 player draft at the top, and that pair isn't all that hot in comparison to some years.
