I think we need to definitely give him more patience.

My take from both games of the summer league is he definitely has underrated passing, and his defense while still bad, had at least improved somewhat, which is more than we can say.

As for his shooting, I'm not concerned. I've said it now, and I'll say it again.

Young has one of the smoothest strokes I've ever seen in a while besides Curry. Every time I see him shoot it, I always feel like every shot is going in.

I do agree with footey's post though. I think Young needs to develop more ball handling skills, and be able to finish better in contact, or use his long wingspan to draw contact like James Harden.

When he starts missing shots, Young just waits around the perimeter, instead of trying to learn how to back door cut off ball.

CBS needs to start drilling it in his head that if he wants to be a SG/SF or whatever, he needs to start hustling more on the court, and being aggressive. I liked how he dove for loose balls, boxed out, and his passing was underrated. He's still young, so I would give him one year or two. Everyone is exaggerating how bad this guy is, even comparing him to Fab Melo, which I disagree. Young has more basketball IQ, and far more athleticism. We already knew Young was going to be a 2-3 year project at least, given his short term college career, and lack of a muscular build.

EDIT: This is also on CBS. He needs to learn how to set up more pin down screens, and integrate Young into the offense. It feels like he rarely ever gets plays set up for him, even though Rozier, Hunter, Mickey, Smart, and Young are the main headliners for our team. He needs to be given more leeway and definitely more ways to succeed on offense. We can't just expect Young to go 20+, if he doesn't have a green light or the proper method of being able to get a good shot.

EDIT 2X: Also this is summer league, can we please tamper expectations? There is at least enough practices to drill into James Young's head to realize whether or not hes fit for the NBA this year, or D-League MVP.

We expect more out of him in SL. Its SL where guys with decent talent should shine especially if in year two, even if 20 years old. I don't expect him to torching it out there for 25+ but he is a very poor so far. Does not bode well for his NBA contributions for this year. He may go back to the D-league at this rate.

It doesn't really work that way, though. Some guys don't play as well in unstructured situations like the summer league. Just because the talent is lesser doesn't necessarily mean a good NBA should dominate there.

SL isn't over, so I am still holding out hope that JY shows something for us to get excited about. 

SL performance is definitely not a great predictor of NBA performance, however, I am wondering if anyone can name a player who looked terrible throughout SL and then became a solid (or better) rotation player that same season.

Particularly embarrassing given that the Spurs summer league team consists of a bunch of guys who were undrafted over the last three years, and a few Euros they drafted 58th in 2007 or something.
