Maybe Drummond is untouchable, maybe he isn't.  We aren't going to find this out from talking with fans.

I agree of course that the GMs' opinions are what matters and that their opinions are in many cases likely to be different from the opinions of fans.

I would qualify the statement though. I don't think we will learn anything useful about Rondo's value from Boston fans, and I don't think we will learn anything useful about Drummond's value from Detroit fans. The home-team bias is too powerful.

But, we might learn something useful by asking other fans around the league what they would think of a Drummond-Rondo swap. Collectively the fans do know something - and even if they don't know everything, ultimately their opinions will matter to GMs because of things like ticket sales.

I would ask the question like this: "How do you think a Rondo/Drummond swap would affect the Celtics and Pistons?"

a. Good trade for both teams
b. Good trade for the Celtics, bad trade for the Pistons
c. Bad trade for the Celtics, good trade for the Pistons
d. Bad trade for both teams.

I think the answers to a question like that, posed to all non-Celtics and non-PIstons fans, would be interesting, and even if not completely informative, a lot more informative than a poll targeted just at the homers.

It might be better than nothing too, given that we can't ask the GMs themselves.
