Interesting. I wonder if that means a trade, or just a simple filing of paperwork.

It'll be a trade for a trade exception.  Simple.  Cash and a 2nd rounder to the other team.  Sheed retires.  Roster spot created, vet min player (Hughes or other) signed.  Trade exception to be used in February, when we know what the team's real needs are.

That's my prediction, at least.

What team has sufficient cap room to absorb Sheed's salary without giving anything back?

Nets, Kings, Wolves are the only three I can think of who might. There's not many out there.

You only need one....

I doubt the Nets help a division rival.

That leaves Sacto and Minnie. Ainge has done deals with Petrie before, so perhaps there's some rapport there. Kahn is a wildcard.

Not exactly the most bitter of rivalries, is it?  New Jersey's going to suck for at least another season or two.  They aren't competing with us for the division title, they're just trying to get better.  Getting better includes accumulating whatever assets you can.

Is Cleveland enough under the cap right now to allow for a swap of Sheed for Anthony Parker?

Would so much rather have Parker over Hughes, Stackhouse, or just about any other FA wing still on the market.
Agreed.  Hughes would be useless.  Parker would contribute.

Cleveland has no need to get rid of Parker.  None.  Whatsoever.  He's a good player on a cheap, expiring contract.  You'd have to give them a pick to get them to bite.

Now, offer to take Mo Williams off their hands.....    ;D

Was just on conference call with Ainge and the media and I asked him about the Sheed situation and he said that situation "should be resolved soon."  and later clarified "before training camp" and went so far as to say "shortly"

From his words and tone it sounds like it will happen in the next few days.

he said that he's happy with the team as is but may try to add another perimeter player and it will most likely be via a vet. minimum signing.

Did you ask him if he was going to use Sheed's contract for Corey Brewer?

Good news. Hopefully we get a trade exception or Rudy Fernandez in exchange (there is still hope, who knows?).

But if it's a buyout or a trade exception I don't want us to sign Larry Hughes for the vet minimum. I'd rather have Flip Murray.

Cleveland is actually over the cap. Trade exceptions count against a team's cap number. So the 14.2 million exception they have cause of Lebron, eats up their cap. So no, they'd have to match Sheed's deal to make it happen, which is why it's not going to.

Ah, that's right. Thanks, Sizz.

I think the trade exception is unlikely at this point. The statement from Danny to me likely says he's tested the trade market for the exception, and the teams with the cap space to make it happen, are looking for a first round pick. That's why the buyout is most likely, now he may just be playing hardball there. Bluffing that they'll just buy him out very soon, in order to make teams pull the trigger for the 2nd rounder, or risk getting nothing for their open space this year (they may hold the space till trade deadline anyway, as they can be valuable as a third team in a deal that can absorb an expiring deal for a first rounder, and allow another team to pick up the contract their looking to) if nothing comes up at the deadline.

Bird in a hand philosophy, if a team has 14mil in cap (which SAK and NJN do) getting a second rounder for renting it to absorb Sheed's deal is better than nothing. So if they really think Danny would rather buy the deal out than give a first rounder, they might be.

I would LOVE to trade for Anthony Parker, but I doubt Cleveland would just give him to us for Sheed's retiring contract.

But if they did, I would be so happy!!!
