I think Rondo's the better player. I wasn't in the CP3 v. Rondo debate, but I'd take Rondo in that too. The thing that stood out to me watching the National Team scrimmage was something the announcers said. That Doc said Rondo was the smartest player he'd ever coached. That's crazy. He's not saying that in a vacuum either because he's currently coaching 3 HOFers.

His BBIQ shows because he has a level of creativity that only Nash and CP3 can match, and a huge sense for the moment. For all the talk about Rondo's shooting he makes all the shots that matter.

With that said, if I had to build a team I'd take Rose in a heartbeat. He's stronger. I think he's more durable. Rondo takes hits like Wade did, except no one ever talks about it. I'm scared thinking about Rondo going into next season let alone 5 years from now.

Rondo's 2.5 years older than Rose. He's better now but will he continue to be better as Rose gets closer to his prime? To me the answer is probably yes unless he fails to develop a reliable perimeter and foul line game.

That, unfortunately, is a distinct possibility.

I don't get the popular reasoning around here that Rondo is the better PG, but Rose is the better overall player.

If Rondo's a better point guard, then he's a better player overall.  I don't think Rose would be better at the 2 position.  As a matter of fact, I think he'd be worse.

I think Rose will always be capable of scoring more points, but is that now the sole measure of how good a player is?

Who would you rather have as your go-to guy, the center-piece of your gameplan and your offense?

Rose.

Who would you rather have running your team if you have a bevy of solid offensive options?

Rondo.

There you have it. Rondo is a very, very valuable player - but if he's the best player on your team, you probably have some work to do in building your roster (that is, if you want to win anything significant). Rose is still improving and isn't the best "main man" in the world, but he's more ideal than Rondo simply because he can carry a team. Honestly, Rondo can't do that consistently unless he's got an arsenal of strong offensive players who he can set up.

Two smart posts that are right on.  I think if Rondo at least develops a good FT shot he will be much more of a self sufficient player capable of carrying the offensive load more like Rose can.  It remains to be seen.  I won't even bother talking about the elusive "Rondo jumpshot", because I'm becoming less optimistic about it.  Either way, Rondo is a better passer and defender and gameplay manager.  Rose is more explosive on offense but if you have enough firepower there you want Rondo as your PG.

Now all that said, Rose is still going to improve a lot more.  It'll be interesting to see how.  If he develops a good jumpshot, especially from three (as he has claimed he has this offseason) things might tip more towards Rose because he will be able to do it all on offense.  I also have to believe that he will become a better defender with his athletic ability and will become better at manging the game as a PG.  Rondo grasped this part of the game pretty quickly but he had a great situation playing with the big three, so his development was easier in that area than Rose's will be on a young team where he is no doubt "the man" on the team.

It will be an interesting rivalry to watch between the two.  There's still a lot up in the air.

I'm a complete homer so I have to go with Rondo.

They are both special players and the debate would be a little easier if Rondo had a consistent jumper (almost there) and better free throws (eh).  This is one of those debates that depends on what your goals for your teams offense and defense are.

As for Rondo having to be surrounded by quality players I would disagree a little.  Rondo made TA look very good in a number of games and did well at making Garnett look more recovered at the beginning of last year with all the ally oops.  I think he could do well with a young running team but has proven himself solid on a veteran half court team.

KG and TA are both good finishers around the rim.  Rondo makes good passes to set up both but I wouldn't discount either.  TA has many faults but his ability to finish is not one of them, dude throws down.

Rondo's lack of a jumpshot hinders his own scoring but he is a great passer, so he thrives on a team with guys who can nail open shots and finish when set up.  Even hobbled KG and Tony "Turnover" Allen can do that.

Rondo doesn't have a great jump shot but he's one of the best pgs at getting to the rim and finishing. I think most of the teams in the league have 1 or 2 guys that are good at finishing a the rim and a couple of other guys that can nail open shots so Rondo would probably thrive on almost any team.

I wouldnt say it was necessarily easier for rondo to develope with the big 3.. his first 2 years he was limited on what he can do.. mostly pass the ball and play defense.. i wouldnt give ray pp and kg too much credit(in his development} its mostly his will to learn watch tape put in the time and effort and the coaching staff doc is one of the best @ developing young talent.. honestly rondo is on a whole other level then rose.. and just because your athletic and fast doesnt mean u can or will be able to play great defense theres a crazy amount of freak athletes in the league who just cant play defense. rose does have crazy potential just based on his athleticism  his finishing ability and mid range game but will he put in the effort to get better the way rondo has? give rajon some credit hes one of the best exciting pg's in this league this is what drives rondo.. and he proves ppl wrong again and again.. tear this thread down cuz rose aint even on rondos level
