I didn’t think Stevens had it in him to trade Smart lol not sold on the return though. Losing another guy who defined the defensive identity this team had. There better be another shoe to drop with those picks.

Not sold on the return? Two first rounders and KP. That’s an incredible return. Smarts defense was not great last year, neither was his decision making with the ball in his hand. He’s also turning 30 next season. This was the time to move him. Bravo, Brad.
Yeah, as far as prospective returns for Smart this is as good as I could have imagined. More talented player and draft capital in return!

Finally something we can agree on, Gouki!

I’m still in shock over this trade… Wow.

Updated depth chart anyone?

https://www.espn.com/nba/team/depth/_/name/bos

That depth chart puts Brogdon as starting pg. I think it’s DW.  But I also think Brad isn’t done.
Still having Brogdon (alongside Horford, and Grant in a potential S&T) there to dangle is super intriguing. Easily capable of putting together a significant offer

Sounds like Brogdons injury will prevent him from being traded this summer. I wouldn’t want to move Horford. He’s a perfect backup 4/5 and is making only $10M/year. They are going to need his leadership with Smart gone. I expect Grant and Pritchard to be traded.
Does it? My understanding was that Brogdon didn’t get moved because there wasn’t time for a physical, not over too serious injury concerns.

Windhorst seems to think it’s serious.

On Thursday, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst revealed a major concern for other teams looking at Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon.

On “Get Up,” the reporter said that health is the major reason the deal with the Clippers fell through late Wednesday.

“[Malcolm] Brogdon has a health issue,” Windhorst said. “A health issue that is so significant that as I understand it, that not only can the Celtics not do this trade, there’s probably no Malcolm Brogdon trade that they can do in the short term.”

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

There was a report elsewhere today that he's expected to be ready for the start of the season.

I like Windy's commentary, but don't think he's right here.

Well, Windhorst is supposedly an NBA insider. Clippers also pulled out of making a trade for Brogdon last minute. So there’s that, too. Stein also reported that it was due to his injury status. Hopefully it’s just the elbow and not a knee or something…

As reported by NBA Insider Marc Stein, the Clippers' concerns over Brogdon's injury status ultimately killed the deal, forcing the Celtics to pivot into another three-team deal to bring Kristaps Porzingis to Boston.

Adam Himmelsbach reported that the Clippers needed more time to evaluate Brogdon’s injury but the Celtics needed to act fast as Zinger had a deadline to opt in. He also said Brogdon’s injury would not keep him out long and is expected to be ready by the time the season opens.

I'm still very torn on this trade. Marcus Smart embodied being a Celtic and his grit/toughness/intangibles are hard to replace. It still remains to be seen if this was the best move. This still was a talented roster if you just stay put. The question is if the ceiling is to lose in the ECF or Finals. I personally don't think Smart was the reason they lost to the 8th seed heat and waddled their way against Atlanta/Philly. but something needs to change.

But, I do wonder if this is needed for the J's to truly take leadership roles with this team and say this is "my team." Marcus was the loudest voice in that locker-room and was the de-facto leader from being the longest tenured celtic. I think sometimes he suffered from "forgetting his role" aka doing too much due to his status with the team. He shouldn't be taking more shots than Brown/Tatum and shouldn't be the guy taking the shot at end of games.

Maybe in the celtics eyes, this void in the locker-room can be filled by Tatum/Brown stepping up and taking more vocal roles. Now, this is CLEARLY their team. Which your best players SHOULD be the leaders on that team. Also, Brogdon/White may be more willing to play their "role" and not do too much knowing where they stand in the pecking order.

Only time will tell. There still are moves to be made.

Excellent post, TP for you.

I'm sad to see Smart leave, but I'm not moaning about it. We all knew that the way to add another star was probably going to mean Smart is gone.

I am as well to some extent, but it became frustrating last year not knowing which Marcus was going to show up. In the end I lost trust in his decision making as a point guard and his defense took a step back as well. It was time to move on and Brad got a good return. I’m excited to have White as the full time starter and can’t wait to see KP in green.
