Marcus still hasn’t figured out that the team needs him to run the offense each game and be a facilitator, not a shooter. Game 2 he was passing like Magic in the first half, the team was rolling and after halftime, he just completely bailed on his duties as a point guard. He’s unpredictable, which makes him unreliable.

I can’t stand Draymond Green, but he was a huge part of the Warriors dynasty. Golden state knows what they are getting from him game to game. That’s what the Celtics needed out of Smart. Someone who is constantly looking for their teammates on offense, anchoring the defense, and just doing the dirty work. Marcus appears unwilling to take on that sort of role and still seems overly concerned with “getting his” on offense most nights.

I’m tired of the hero ball and the poor decision making on both ends. He’s not a selfless player like Brogdon and White. Smart is 29, won DPOY last season, so hopefully he still has some value around the league. Get what you can for him now, Brad. It’s time to move on.

Smart's the only guy who came to play hard tonight. Try blaming everyone else who sleepwalked through game 3.

I’m not talking about one specific game. This is a general theme with him. He’s the major piece that needs to be moved.

Every year there is talk that he should be traded then every year he stays. Then every year he repeats his hero ball antics in the playoffs.Once in awhile it works but mostly it doesn't. I would have been ok with him being traded years ago.

Totally agree. This team needs a DNA change. Getting rid of smart is the first step. Brown may be the 2nd step

It’s sad, but needs to be done

Smart is no longer playing anywhere near “DPOY” level either and he’s barely making hustle plays/winning plays either. In fact it’s almost always bad plays, decisions, turnovers, etc with him

And I remind people, Smart literally shot Miami back into the game in last years Game 7, and if Butler hit that go ahead 3 and we lost it would have been the biggest choke probably in history and Smart would have been ripped for it afterwards.

Unless you are getting an All-NBA player back, shouldn’t trade JB.

Proposed this on another thread:

Boston: Trae, Bey

Atlanta: Brown, PP, and one of Smart/White/Brogdon

Not a huge fan of Trae, but I actually think this team would truly benefit from his playmaking and confidence with the ball, especially late in games. And we'd presumably have the players to help cover for him defensively.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

This has to be the first time in my life that I'm actually going to defend Smart.

I've wanted him gone for ages now with his ball-chucking, turnover-prone nature. But in this year's playoffs he's actually been consistently excellent and has been one of the biggest reasons the team was able to actually scrape its way to the ECF.

His turnover number's (shy of one or two games) have been largely respectable, and he's actually been shooting the ball shockingly efficiently (15 PPG on 46%/37%/80% shooting for the playoffs).  There were a few games there in the Atlanta and Philly series where the team looked utterly disinterested, and we only ended up winning the games because Smart played his butt off at the end of the games.

There have been so any years where Smart has EARNED a trade - but to trade him after this season, when he actually played more or less the right way for a chance...feels unfair.

Al and Brown are in the firing line before Smart for me, at least in terms of criticism
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

I think he needs to go in terms of us needing a new voice especially. As far as on the court although he can be frustrating at times he isn't as bad as he used to be

I’m in the “keep Smart” camp. He’s trick or treat, so I’m still not a fan of him being the team’s point guard. But he’s a difference maker and I think we need his fire. Just need a steadier presence running the team.

I’m ready to move on from JB though.

Smart's the only guy who came to play hard tonight. Try blaming everyone else who sleepwalked through game 3.

I’m not talking about one specific game. This is a general theme with him. He’s the piece that needs to be moved.

Every year there is talk that he should be traded then every year he stays. Then every year he repeats his hero ball antics in the playoffs.Once in awhile it works but mostly it doesn't. I would have been ok with him being traded years ago.

Smart has always thought himself better than he actually is - that's why he makes those reckless passes, big stepback threes and goes for big defensive plays that work 20% of the time. So that 20% of the time he can turn a game with a grandstand play. It's how he's manage to win games for us with a critical steal or a charge  or even a clutch three.

But the other 80% of the time it doesn't work, and 20% of the 80% it can have a catastrophic result like what happened against Atlanta where they stole a game from us at home when he tried to steal the ball from Trae at halfcourt with us leading by 1. I guess that's the kind of drive and confidence in yourself you need to be successful in the NBA when you're not the most talented guy around.

Without overreacting to the last game, where if we did we would probably want to get rid of the whole team and start over (I know I did immediately during the carnage) I feel it comes down to two things a) what should he be doing to effect winning; and b) is he the doing those things at the right time, which is a judgment thing. When he starts those hero ball actions, particularly offensively, I've noticed it tends to be because there's no output from anyone else and he feels he has to be "the guy". We had 14 points from Tatum and 12 from Brown and zero from Brogdon.

The other question is whether his style is the right one for this team. For years we relied on his tenacity and his defensive mentality to help give us our identity. He's a great defensive guard historically but not the most reliable playmaker and his shooting, while it's improved, is even streakier. What alternatives are out there that would be a bigger net positive for our team? Would the best option already be in the team in Brogdon or White? Assuming we find that person, can Smart coexist with them, either as a combo guard or an impact player off the bench who understands his role?

These are things for Brad to consider. I do feel that Brad has a lot of time for Smart, he thinks that Marcus is the heartbeat of the team, so I'm not expecting him to be shipped out. At least not next year. In fact, unless we end up pooping the bed again on Tuesday I don't expect very many changes on the basis of getting swept. Brad strikes me as a deliberate kind of guy. It would take something like a total chemistry and culture breakdown for some major changes to be made - if he concludes that Joe has lost the locker room there's a case to be made for his dismissal even though they just extended him a few months ago. If there's a break in the relationship between Tatum and Brown (which I doubt) then obviously they would look to move Brown. If the team was sick of Marcus (which I don't think it is) then Smart would be shipped out. Otherwise, I think they would try to forensically analyze what went wrong and see if they can fix it, at least for the next year. Not what most of us want to hear I know

I would be shopping Brogdon before I shop Smart.
