AD wouldn't completely rule out the Cs without Kyrie

Everyone knew it was going to be a wild summer for the Celtics, but given Boston’s unceremonious exit from the NBA playoffs, the Green’s silly season is beginning in spring.

The Celtics are still in the process of picking up the pieces after being dispatched from the second round by the Milwaukee Bucks in just five games. What’s next is an offseason destined to be filled with change, the looming Kyrie Irving situation being the biggest domino that must fall.

The general consensus seems to be most expect Irving to opt out of his contract and leave Boston once July 1 arrives. That’s a sharp contrast from Irving’s preseason insistence he’d remain in Boston. The apparent change of heart also affects Boston’s reported pursuit of New Orleans Hornets big man Anthony Davis. The superstars are friends, and re-signing Irving was viewed as a necessary step to not only acquiring Davis but convincing him to stay in Boston for the long term.

But in his Celtics autopsy for The Athletic, longtime NBA reporter David Aldridge revealed an interesting nugget. Aldridge reported there might be a chance the Celtics could convince Davis to stay in Boston regardless of what Irving ultimately decides to do.

“I’ve heard that Davis wouldn’t completely rule out staying with the Celtics without Irving, but the odds of him re-upping in that scenario are significantly lower,” Aldridge wrote.

Admittedly, there’s not much there. It’s not groundbreaking stuff, and if you’re a Celtics fans hoping to see Davis on the parquet next year, that tidbit alone doesn’t give you a ton of confidence it’s going to happen. But it is an interesting wrinkle in the ongoing Davis saga, especially considering everyone assumed he and Irving would have to be a package deal for both to remain with the Celtics for the foreseeable future.

It’s going to be an interesting spring and even more fascinating summer.

I mean, I don’t really think this is a “development,” just like most of these “rumors” aren’t really “developments.”

You always to have to look at who the rumor benefits. To me, that looks like David Griffin. He knows that Boston by far has the best possible package for Davis, and given the controversy around Kyrie, it might dissuade Danny from trying to trade for Davis if he thinks he might not stay without Kyrie. Hence, the Davis “development” today.

It’s funny though how the narrative has now changed that he would never consider playing in Boston to now potentially be would resign even without Kyrie. 😂 Looks like that elite semifinals playoff run convinced him!

If you had more than a year left on your deal though, maybe Ainge would still take that gamble. Maybe.

If we could get Kyrie back and get Davis, I'm all for it.

And quite frankly, I would give up anybody to get him. If Kyrie has another all-star alongside him, I think we'll be significantly better next year!

Well if we are going to with Kyrie is the reason for the regression of Brown, Tatum, and Rozier then with the subtraction of Kyrie 1 or 2 of them may become an All-Star

Better than the dump that we have right now. $30M Hayward needs to step up and put up Jazz-type plays the first game he plays next season, and for the rest of the season. If Paul George can get it done in 16 months, I expect nothing less from a full-year recovered Hayward. I'm already annoyed with his underperforming presence in these last four games of the postseason, and his inconsistency throughout the season. That is the number 1 thing I am going to look for. Number 2 is the departure of Terry Rozier because he needs to go. Number 3 is the arrival of Anthony Davis. Number 4 is Kyrie Irving redeeming himself.

I mean I don't really think this changes anything. Sure, he might consider resigning, but the articles also says the chances would drop substantially. So in the end its the same calculus its always been, which if you don't have Kyrie back you aren't giving up a package of AD that would be good enough to get AD.
