Quote
Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo offered a grudging respect to the Boston Celtics for their level of physicality through the first two games of their second-round NBA playoff series against Milwaukee.

"You can play to the limits of fouling," Antetokounmpo said Wednesday, per Yahoo Sports' Vincent Goodwill. "They definitely play to the limits of [flagrant] fouling. Now, you gotta f--king play. You can't complain to the refs; you gotta play."

Unbelievable.

This coming from the guy who gets away with murder from push-offs, and constantly traveling...

I'm really starting to hate Giannis, because I used to love how humble and no fooling around mentality, ("I don't care about being best friends in the NBA,") but man... Argh

Does anybody else consider it weird that the key word in that sentence - flagrant - is one the writer added? It's in brackets because Giannis didn't put it there!

I don't know what he did say or what this quote means. Somebody at BR is looking to stir things up.
Good point.  We have no idea what Giannis was trying to say without knowing the word that he actually used.

Did not realize that when I read the headline. If Giannis never used the word 'flagrant' then I have no issue with his comments. We do push the limits of fouling, Horford is one of my favorite players in the league, but I think he gets to defend with a physicality that other players aren't allowed to. Of course nothing even close to the definition of a flagrant foul.

If the word 'Flagrant' was really added by the writer and then used in a headline, well then BR = Fake News
BR took an exact twitter quote from Vincent Goodwell at Yahoo.

It sure doesn't seem to me he is taking a shot at the Celtics or complaining, but words on paper can be quite different than what a video or audio of what he said would reveal.

Anyway, if he is complaining(which, again, I don't think he is), can you imagine how much he would be complaining if Smart was playing?

I mean while this could be true, maybe he put the brackets in to express to stress the fact Giannis said flagrant.

Anyways, this isn't just from BR. Vincent's interview with Giannis is over NBC Sports, Mass Live, Yahoo! Sports, so unless he's lying purposefully, (which I doubt,) then it would only tarnish his reputation if that is true.

This doesn't sound the least bit critical of the Celtics and he says the right move isn't to cry but to play through it, but I'm glad to see the knives coming out for an opponent for once.

I agree.  This sounds like a guy responding to a question, but not making excuses.

In journalism, brackets aren't used to stress something; they're used to make clear something that wasn't actually said but which was implied. The question here is, do we know (does the writer know?) that Giannis meant flagrant fouls?

Ah, I see. I didn't know that. Thanks for clearing that up.

So I guess we probably will never know unless Giannis himself clears it all up.

My guess is he got a leading question about whether he thought the Celtics' fouls were flagrant or bordering on flagrant. When a word is inserted like that it often refers to the way the question is framed. Which is also of course a way of fudging the response to give it the more inflammatory/attention-grabbing element that the question was intended to elicit.

Don't think Giannis means ill-will...looks moreso like BR trying to stir stuff up.

Anyways - speaking of getting physical - where is Marcus Smart these days?

I think it's definitely questionable as to whether the reporter and Giannis were on the exact-same wavelength. This is likely BR clickbait.
