He is still a good player, very versatile and a proven vet. BUT more and more this season we have seen him get "beat up" by the likes of Jokic, Embiid, Nurkic.....  in all fairness he shouldn't be guarding these guys but CBS forces him to , especially late in games where Baynes is likely sitting on the bench

Just overall he is not getting any younger and you wonder where his place is with the team after this season. 

IF the Celtics fail in the playoffs, Irving walks.....  does big AL stay OR does he not pickup his player option and goes to join another team?   I'm not sure how much (upper) money he can get but I'm sure there would be several teams lining up to try to sign him. For example Bucks, Nuggets etc.

Sucks Danny didn't pull off a risky but potential high reward trade to draft Harry Giles (who dropped like no tomorrow) a few years ago.  Celts at the moment have nobody to take Horford place in case he walks...

I don't think he walks away from $30 million. And if he did, the Celtics could possibly restructure his deal to last 2-3 years.

However, if/when he picks up his option, I don't think anyone is off limits this summer in a potential trade either.

But to answer your question, if it was Horford's decision, he would exercise his option and stay in Boston for another year.

$30m is a lot to walk away from. But at 33 years old and having already made $158m in his career, I think he'd have to give consideration to joining another team to make a significant run at a title. I think Milwaukee would make a lot of sense for him. He's already familiar with Coach Bud. Can you imagine him taking Brook Lopez's minutes?

I think he opts out and re-signs another deal with Boston. Like 4 years at $75-80 million. That basically means he is extending for 3 years at $45-50 million while helping Boston save $10 million off the luxury tax bill.

the most likely scenario regardless of playoff results is he opts out of his last year to sign a deal that goes another 4 years at an average that's less than next year's salary but higher than the average he'd get for his following contract as a UFA.  It's not an unusual situation --> trading long-term financial security for one  year of a little bit less.
