lost in all the media mess is that the current #2 seed the raptors only has 3 less losses than us right now.

Philly is one loss ahead of us. If celtics can keep racking up wins and one or both of those teams hits a little slump we are right in the thick of things again.  Which is all you can ask for with how poorly we started this season and hovering around 5 spot for most of it
What it shows is how thin the line is between having a great season and a disappointing season, in the eyes of fans.

4 bad losses. That's it. 4 bad losses.

If Boston doesn't lose to the Suns, Knicks and twice to the Magic the Celtics are 37-15, one game behind Milwaukee, a half game ahead of Toronto on their way to a 59 win season.

I think we still might be pushing a 55-56 win season.  We have been playing really well lately.

Alright, so it seems like there is a lot of melting down on this board right now. Wanted to chime in with a few points in the larger scheme, cause I have been a bit perplexed by it.

We have won 6 of our last 7 games with a close loss to the Warriors
We have beaten Toronto 2 of the 3 games we have played them
We split with the Bucks
We are 2-0 against the 76ers
We have the second best point differential in the east behind the Bucks
We are currently given the second best odds to win the title (tied with Raptors)
We are 1.5 games out of the 3rd seed. The pacers have lost oladipo for the season and the 76ers play Golden, State, Denver and us in their next 6 games.
No player on our team has requested a trade

Is it really that bad?
Yeah it is bad because all those wins are at home. The C’s have to play those teams on the road the rest of the season where they struggle. Plus they won’t have home court advantage against the Bucks in the playoffs and that is a big problem. But at least they beat the Knicks on Friday.

They were really bad on the road early in the season. Do you expect them to be a sub .500 road team the rest of the year?

This is what they have to fix. The difference is pretty stark, pro- and post-the 10-10 start:

Code: [Select]
First 20 games Middle 32 games Remaining 30 games

Overall  10-10 .500 23-9 .718 30 games left
Home 5-3 .625 16-3 .842 14 home games left
Away 5-7 .416 7-6 .538 16 away games left

If we assume the probabilities will stay similar based on history (say we win 70% of home games and 50% of away games) we would end up with an overall record of 51-31, which last season would put us 4th. Would it be enough this year to get to the 2nd seed? We need to win more than 70% of our home games and we can't just split our away games, if we want to get to No.2 (particularly as Toronto has an easier schedule than ours - ours is the 8th hardest and theirs is the 19th from here on).
Any odd typos are because I suck at typing on an iPhone :D

This proves what I've always thought: every game matters. Some people like to shrug off the losses to bad teams as anomalies—and maybe they are, if it's only 1 or 2 in a whole season, but as you point out, Boston had 4 in half a season. Every game counts equally in the standings, every game is equally important.

Not sub .500 but a .500 team isn’t a crazy thought.

Our 10-10 start hurt us, plain and simple. Not showing up against the Knicks hurt us. Not showing up against the Suns hurt us. If we had gone 12-8 or 13-7, it’d be a different story now.

If the playoffs were to start, I think we’re getting past the first round against any variety of BKN, IND, or whoever. But the second round against Philly/Raps/Bucks? We’re not getting past those teams if they have HCA.

the first 20 games really hurt us in the standings, now we are playing catchup.

These last 30 games are going to be big, because with the way the standings are we have a good chance to make it to the #3 seed (will make it today if we win). and the #2 seed is in sight if the Raptors hit a bit of a slump. Only 3 games in the loss column less, which with 30 games to go makes us closing that gap a realistic possibility.

The bucks for now look like the team to beat, BUT if we can get to the #2 seed who knows what will happen in the playoffs. They still are a team with one great star(granted he is a top player).

I will take that bet. I think we can definitely take Philly or Toronto w/out home court. Less sure about the Bucks.
