The Bucks are entering the Davis-sweepstakes, according to longtime sports journalist Gery Woelfel (https://twitter.com/GeryWoelfel/status/1090289903462768642?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1090289903462768642&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fnba.nbcsports.com%2F2019%2F01%2F29%2Frumor-bucks-offer-to-trade-pelicans-anyone-besides-giannis-antetokounmpo-for-anthony-davis%2F: ).

Giannis Antetokounmpo is the only player who isn’t on the table in trade talks, Woelfel hears. Still, if the Pelicans are looking to rebuild post-AD, it’ll be difficult for Milwaukee to make a competitive offer.

The Bucks are unable to trade a first-round pick until the 2023 season at the earliest, as the Suns own their 2019 selection and the Cavs own their 2021 pick. Eric Bledsoe and Khris Middleton can hit free agency this summer, which decreases their trade value, and after Milwaukee’s big three, there isn’t much on the roster to get overly excited about as a player headlining a trade package (apologies to President Malcolm Brogdon).

Milwaukee would provide Davis with a chance to win, as the team sits atop the Eastern Conference standings. The Giannis-AD pairing would certainly be among the most exciting in the league, though it feels like a pipedream for all the Wisconsin hopefuls.

The Blazers are expected to aggressively pursue an additional star-level player to put alongside Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, sources tell Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders.

Kyler writes that Portland may be a darkhorse in the Anthony Davis sweepstakes. The team has a bounty of players on mid-sized deals and the franchise owns all of its future first-rounders.

It’s unclear what exactly the Pelicans are looking for potential trades but I’d speculate that Jusuf Nurkic would certainly be in any Blazers’ deal for Davis. Nurkic re-signed with the team on a four-year. $48MM deal and with the big man thriving this season, his team-friendly contract makes him an attractive trade chip.

The Bucks shouldn't be in the conversation. Almost any team in the league has better trading pieces than them.

The Blazers could come up with a decent offer, but I doubt it will be enough and if you take into consideration draft picks to sell than their best offer wouldn't come close to what Ainge has in his arsenal.

I wonder if the Blazers will go after Vucevic.

???

That would be such a weird fit with Nurkic.

Edit: or do you mean, after they traded for Davis?

Blazers have nothing to offer if McCollum's not on the table. Can't build a package around first round picks because become meaningless once you add AD to that team and they have no other tradeable young talent.
2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

Even then, what is the point of acquiring McCollum? He's 27. He's not the greatest defender, and while him and Holiday would be a good fit backcourt wise, I tend to think Holiday is on his way out the moment AD gets traded.

I wonder if the Bucks could find a 3rd team for Middleton that could provide assets.  Not sure that it would be enough to top the Lakers offer (apparently any 3 young players and 1st's) but it might especially as they could provide salary relief by taking all of the Pelicans bad contracts (using Middleton, Bledsoe, and Hill).

I've heard speculation that the Raptors are interested and would basically put all their young players in the table to get it done as well.

No one is giving up major assets for an expiring Middleton/Bledsoe, certainly not enough to land Davis. They just don't have the juice.

Hearing news like this provides me a growing appreciation of what Danny has seemingly done twice now (trading for KG in '07, and having the assets to go after Davis in '19).  Also why some people love what Hinkie accomplished in Philly.

You really need an asset accumulation phase if you're going to build a team through the draft and/or trades (i.e. not free agency), and a long term outlook.  Look at both Danny and Hinkie, constantly tinkering and making moves when they're not a contender.  Constantly acquiring picks, selling high, etc.

Look at Milwaukee.  Haven't been a contender until this year.  But what were they doing before that?  Did they sell high on anybody?  Did they acquire any picks?  Did they have any long term vision other than riding Giannis to the top?

2013 - traded away rookie Tobias Harris for expiring Redick.
2014 - traded away Brandon Jennings (still good!), no picks back, but did get Knight/Middleton though
2015 - traded Knight for MCW (buying high) instead of taking the Lakers pick from Phoenix.  Later traded MCW for Tony Snell, whoopee.
2015 - traded away a 1st (Anunoby) and a 2nd (Powell) for Greivis Vasquez.  A backup guard on an expiring deal, they gave away a 1st for that?
2016 - a 33 win team, no trades!
2017 - only traded for expirings and Tony Snell
2018 - traded away a 1st for Bledsoe, dumping Monroe
2019 - traded away a 1st for George Hill, dumping Dellavedova and Henson.

No long term vision.  No value for lottery picks like Jabari Parker, MCW, and now probably Thon Maker.  Most of their trades involved them sending out 1sts instead of getting them back.  Dumping several contracts that they signed (Monroe, Plumlee, Henson, Dellavedova).

These are the opposite of all the moves you want to make when you're rebuilding.
