While I don’t believe Hayward is the reason for our less-than-stellar record, I do believe how well we do in the playoffs depends on him.
We pretty much know enough about our shortened rotation. Guys like Kyrie, Al, Baynes, Smart, Morris are pretty dependable for what we expect. Tatum is a wildcard, as is Brown. I think Rozier will see a reduced role and maybe even a short leash.
But Hayward? He’s different. Are we going to get the guy who can flirt with a triple-double or the guy who doesn’t make a FG all game? He can be the difference-maker. Had he been Gordon Hayward yesterday, we probably win pretty easily. If he becomes the player we know he can be, we should run through the East and give GSW all they can handle.
Will he get there by May? We shall see.
I’m very confident that a full offseason and training camp will bring him 100% back (and I also believe he will be a starter next season). A lot going on this season (physically and mentally) to know if he will do it for this run. Still 3 months to get there, but it’s like two steps forward, one back, one forward, two back, etc. with him thus far.
