Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge told ESPN on Monday that both Irving (knee) and Hayward (ankle) appear at full health and are ready for the new season.

"I don't want to hype it up too much, but I'm saying that, if our training camp were starting today, that they would be here today going full speed," Ainge said. "It's not like they need an extra month. I think that they know they have an extra month so they are sort of pacing themselves. They're playing as if to build up to that opening day of training camp [on Sept. 26]."

"They'll both be here within the next week or so, by the time Labor Day is over, they will all be playing 5-on-5," Ainge said. "I think it's just a matter of, if they're not playing 5-on-5 now, then it's only because they want it more of a controlled environment, I guess. They're doing everything -- dunking the basketball off both legs and playing 1-on-1 live and jumping and cutting and defending. I'm excited for them."

Ainge is not the type to exaggerate about these things either. He usually is the one to put a damper on optimism regarding injuries.

One thing that jumped out to me was the start of training camp being Sep 26 when our preseason opener is 2 days later in Charlotte. I figured we would've had 1 week of camp, not 1 day, with a likely travel day on the 27th.

I saw this too, and I was a bit confused as well.  I would think that they would want more time than that before the 1st preseason game.   Plus I would think they would want more than under 3 weeks from the start of camp before the 1st real game on Oct. 16.  But maybe I just never noticed how brief that timeline was in past seasons?  Seems rushed.

I thought perhaps the same thing happened last year since the regular schedule has been more spread out. Last year we also began camp on Sep 26, but our first game was not until Oct 2, a home game at that vs the same Hornets.

That Sep 28 game could very well be a game that our vets, particulary the big 3, not only don't play, but don't even travel with the team.

Longest off-season ever and I've been busy. Glad to read Irving and Hayward will get a full training camp.

100% ready to go to training camp and being 100% ready are two different things.

We're all 100% ready to go to training camp.

This quote is from OP:
"They'll both be here within the next week or so, by the time Labor Day is over, they will all be playing 5-on-5," Ainge said.

So, I'm not sure what that means as the first "allowable" date to report is no earlier than Sept 25th.

official team activities don't start until training camp opens.  That is the first time a player can be penalized for not being somewhere, but they are certainly allowed to train before training camp opens if they want to.

That does seem really crazy.

It did feel long yet it was probably one of the shortest considering how late we played into the playoffs and how early the season starts now.

I always believed the reports that Kyrie and Gordon would be 100% by the time training camp started. Both injuries were expected to be healed up by the end of July. I just never understood people saying that the C's would bring them on slowly and not give them full reign until Christmas. I see them being 100% on opening day and getting 30 MPG straight from the start.

Yeah, I never understood that line of thinking either. No need to bring them along slowly if it's August and they're seemingly ready to go
