The Celtics of past always embraced their 6th man it was no punishment .In Jason's case, what you freely give away you have not lost or has been taken.
Your ability to be team first will echo and reverberate all season from the fans.

It’s the right thing for him to say, and I believe he would accept a bench role with good grace. On the other hand I don’t think he actually believes that he will be coming off the bench. I don’t think many people believe he will be coming off the bench. I think by far the most likely starting lineup is the same one that started last season. The only likely change would be if Hayward is not quite ready and needs to be eased in.

Source to him saying this?  Just curious to see the quote in context.

He's only 20 years old... There is no way in heck he is thinking that after the rookie season he had that he is coming off the bench...

He isn't working as hard as he is working right now to come off the bench...

I will say this again...what is the big deal about coming off the bench...BB is a game of rotations  it is not soccer or baseball. It shouldn't matter who starts or who comes  off the bench....

It’s not a big deal, the coach can start whatever unit he thinks is best. Players however consider starting as a sign of respect and status. It also makes sense to have your best players on the floor as as much possible. Yes, Tatum or Brown or Hayward could start on the bench and it would likely work fine. It also easy to start the same unit as the first game last year and adjust the rotation so that there is always a starter on the floor. Since both options would work and one puts the best unit on the floor to start the game and also keeps your best players happy I think that option makes the most sense.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
I'm glad he said it because I don't see anyone else volunteering to take the seat.

Hayward is too established, Jaylen wants to be a star and this 3 wing lineup might not work as well without Morris' size.

He didn’t volunteer, he said he would be okay with whatever the coach did. It’s the right thing to say. But it is also the only thing he can say, anything else would make him look bad. I think he would do whatever coach asked without complaining, but I am also sure he wants to start.

Let’s be clear too. I think there is very little chance that Tatum or Brown or Hayward do not start health permitting. If healthy I think it is almost certain that the same unit that started the first game last season will start next season.  CBS can manage the rotation to keep a scorer on the floor at all times if needed without putting one of the best players on the bench to start the game. He can bring one of them off the bench but it is not needed so I don’t think he will.

Great to hear him say this.  One of these guys (Brown, Hayward, or Tatum) should come off the bench.  It will make the team better.  I would much rather have Tatum off the bench than have him trying to play major minutes as a big.  Neither situation is ideal.  Hayward may play off the bench as well.  That is fine with me too.  Maybe it is easier for the young player to accept that role.

So if Jaylen gets asked if he's fine coming off the bench does he have to say sure?  What about Hayward?  Its the politically correct move to say YES but I almost wish he exhibited some star attitude and said some non-answer version of NO.

Is he gonna stop working hard just because he comes off the bench? No.

He's working this hard to become the best player he can and help the team win.  It has nothing to do whether he'll start or come off the bench

All that said, though, he'll be starting. It makes no sense to bring him off the bench
I'm bitter.

I will say this again...what is the big deal about coming off the bench...BB is a game of rotations  it is not soccer or baseball. It shouldn't matter who starts or homesok of the bench....

They announce the names of the starters with lights and loud noises. Starters, on average, make more money than guys that come off the bench. Tell competitive guys like MJ or Kobe that they're going to be coming off the bench.... I'm guessing you won't get a gracious response.

I think it's a big move on his part. I also think that it was great that Smart vocalized the same sentiment last year. While we now know that Smart is a backup on this team, we weren't sure at the time.
The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.
