None of the comments so far addresses taking Smart away from the Celtics as a net benefit to the Sixers.  That would be a major component of their motivation (to sign him above market).
I don't think the 76ers are in the place where the foundations of their team are secure enough to be worried about tactically weakening a potential rival.

3 of their 8-man playoff rotation are FAs, and a 4th could potentially be a RFA. They don't know what Fultz is going to give them and Covington/Simmons both showed worrying warts that need to be addressed. (easier with Simmons as he's a rookie and should get much better)

I don't want to lose Smart, but he doesn't undo the C's team to an extent that the 76ers should think beyond what does he add to "our team"

With Fultz and Simmons, Philly really needs guys who can shoot.  That's not Marcus.  Don't see him as a good fit there.

Agreed. Potentially letting Redick go to sign Smart would be a step backward.

If Redick re-signs, will probably be a one year deal/one year team option. Otherwise he is probably going to get the MLE.
I think a multi-year 8 million dollar deal is the floor of his value. He had a really good year.

He's going to get more than Marcus in all odds.

Small-ball lineup of Smart/Fultz/Anderson/Simmons/Embiid ;D

One of the worst shooting lineups I can imagine
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

Colangelo is their GM. They are going after a skilled offensive player.

Not a hustle guard like Smart. That is not Colangelo's MO.

They're also not going to restrain their cap space with an offer sheet, which would probably prevent them from going after a max player they'd be interested in.

No. If they strike out this year they will likely roll over their cap space to next year. They are aiming higher than Smart, or at least they should be.

Smart, never taking his eyes of colangelo, picks up the offer sheet, crumples it into a ball, stuffs it in his mouth, chews, swallows. Gets up from the table, turns and walks out the door.

Nah. The Sixers will target George or Leonard.

After that, they'd be more likely to pursue Bradley or KCP.

I just don't think there will be a bidding war for Smart. Non-playoff teams will be looking for different skill sets. He may get a full mid-level offer from a playoff team, but I think that the Cs would match that.

Given the 76ers history with injured players I'd say there is a .0001% chance they'd go after him.

agreed.  love Smart but Reddick will get offered more money and rightfully so.  Sixers need Reddick more than they need Smart and they need to sign a player that can be their alpha dog down the stretch of a close game even moreso.

Smart gets much love from C's fans because he plays with so much fire, and he has a knack for clutch plays, especially when he's playing with the starters at the end of games. He's the guy everyone cheats off, and he's very good at making teams pay for that.

He also had an awful stretch in the 3rd quarter that let Philly back in the game. When you add up the good and the bad, I think most fans overstate his importance. He's a valuable backup, but will never be efficient enough to be a cornerstone player.

Possibly the best thing that could happen to the C's would be for Marcus to sign with Philly for $15M. They look to be arch rivals for the next 12 years. Overpaying middle class players is death in the NBA. A contract like that would cause them problems for a long time.

I'll pay money to see a Fultz/Smart/Simmons backcourt trying to shoot the ball :D

One year deal at 15-18 million would be okay for them but no way do you tie up $ long term in Smart if you are the 76ers

I agree that would be good for them, but I don't think Smart will only for a one year deal. If anything this was even less likely given the injuries he suffered this year.

Offer sheets to restricted free agents have to be for at least two years.

Understood, yet being a full time starter may open up a bigger pay day after the one year to cash in.
