Agree - I'm going to miss Tommy big time.  He's a treasure.

Scal's not Tommy but who else is there?  I think Scal's ok considering there's really no one else.  And God, please don't make me go thru another Donny Marshall.  Egads.

I do enjoy Scal breaking down plays but when it comes to roster shuffling, Mannix knows more than Scal.  Which is fine.  By the way, I like Mannix better than Abby.
.

Gorman to me is the best play by play guy in the business, i've watched many local telecasts on NBA league pass and I can safely say that he is the best. That being said I feel like the mix of Mike and ultimate homer color commentary is required for a Celtics broadcast, Scal is okay but I think i'd prefer Cedric to fill Tommy's shoes, I know it'd never happen but I think he's the closest we got right now.

Mike Gorman is the best announcer ever.
He is the main reason I have been a Celtics fan for 37 years.

I love Mr Gorman because he's keeps it real while at the sametime being positive and humble. I never feel like Mike is talking down to us as fans where as the others all feel like they trying to impress us.

I watch a lot of NBA games and boy or boy is some of the play by play and color commentary terrible with a capital TERRIBL

I suspect this will be Tommy last year and Mike won't be too far behind 5-7 more seasons (he's already 70 if you can believe that)

Mike and Tommy is going to be one tough act to follow. Especially Gorman he is without a doubt the best play by play in basketball.
ok fine

The whole Scal-Mannix bickering goes back to a couple of days ago when during the gameMannix, Scal, and Gorman were talking about teams they wouldn't want to play in the first round. Mannix asked if there was any team Scal would like to play in the first round. Scal responded with something like "Mannix is the same guy who thought the Cs should have done this" Mannix then got p!ssy and by game end Scal apologized because what Mannix said was off camera in the pressroom.

That then spilled over to the last couple games.

I really respect Mannix for his overall knowledge of the league.  He is the most informative analyst we have had in years.  I like his inside expertise of what is happening around the league.  He is always up on the latest rumors and is a very intelligent dude. I only listen to pre and post game when he is present.  Sherrod and Draper offer very little for the knowledgeable NBA fan and I could take or leave Scal taking over for Tommy.  He also says little beyond the obvious but overall is ok.  I agree on the Cedric Maxwell taking the position.  Always enjoy his views.  Will always love Tommy.  Please feel well.

I think Sean Grande does an excellent job doing play by play on the radio broadcasts, I wonder if the Celtics would consider moving him to TV when Mike retires? I think Sean Grande has done some fill in games for Gorman from time to time.

Grande has said the plan all along was for him to do radio for a few years and then take over for Gorman... but Gorman has stuck around longer than they thought he would at the time. It's too bad the Celtics are so deep at that position. Grande is great also.

Do you remember what it was that Mannix had said off-air?

Celtics are real lucky to have top notch play by play guys at both the local TV and local radio levels.

As some others have touched on, take a glance around the NBA League Pass landscape and you'll realize how special Gorman is. Easily top 3 play by play if not the best.

I really don't mind the Scal/Mannix stuff.  Look, the past two games have been duds in the 2nd half and you need filler.  Might as well get more out of those two.

Scal & Frank Isola daily on NBA Radio are excellent. Scal knows the game and the league. He & Frank play well off each other.

Mike Gorman is the best announcer ever ...

Hard to argue anyone better than in his prime Marv Albert. "Yes! and the foul."

Tonight they were arguing about whether or not Memphis should have traded Evans.

Scal seemed to think Memphis was correct not trading Evans because they wanted to resign him next year. and Mannix correctly noted that they would only have the mid-level exception available because they're over the cap and dont have his bird rights.

So Scal really had no idea of what he was talking about, as Memphis could use their MLE whether or not they already have Evans. And, as Mannix noted, they'll probably get outbid anyways.

From memory this seems incorrect:

Mannix reported that Memphis didn’t want to trade Tyreke without getting a 1st in return and since they didn’t, they held on to him since they felt confident they could resign him.

Scal said it was a good move by DA to not trade for him since 1st round picks have longer contracts and he probably wouldn’t be able to retain Evans with all the other contract considerations (aka Tyreke would’ve been a 3month rental). That said, he was surprised at Memphis’ confidence to resign him since Tyreke was only signed to a 1-year

Mannix then said that Memphis could use their MLE.

Scal said he thinks Tyreke will be offered more than MLE.

I forget what Mike said but I remember Scal saying as well that the Memphis team, as currently constructed, probably isn’t going to be the Memphis team next year anyway. So they could clean house and then sign Tyreke to a contract bigger than MLE.

Didn’t notice any tension here. I think there was more tension during the Cleveland flip-flopping exchange. And Mannix calling out Scal with “how many more teams are you afraid to face in the 1st round?”

A lot of what you are saying is correct (some of my details might be wrong, i deleted my recording of the game  :P); but for sure I recall Scal didn't seem to initially realize that Memphis would need to use the MLE at all, and he also didn't acknowledge that they are in cap he#l and their team will be pretty much the same as last year. I mean, what are they gonna do, trade an injured Parsons' albatross contract? This cap crisis makes their chances of resigning Evans slim due to the debate which i think you mostly correctly noted above.

Bottom line is Scal didn't have a good handle on Memphis' general cap situation.

I dunno if I'd call it tension, but Scal needs to do a better job of understanding teh cap. Too often the local announcers and analysts aren't crunching the numbers right.

I will make that argument. Gorman is the best! And a much better person than ole Marv!
