Tonight they were arguing about whether or not Memphis should have traded Evans.
Scal seemed to think Memphis was correct not trading Evans because they wanted to resign him next year. and Mannix correctly noted that they would only have the mid-level exception available because they're over the cap and dont have his bird rights.
So Scal really had no idea of what he was talking about, as Memphis could use their MLE whether or not they already have Evans. And, as Mannix noted, they'll probably get outbid anyways.
From memory this seems incorrect:
Mannix reported that Memphis didn’t want to trade Tyreke without getting a 1st in return and since they didn’t, they held on to him since they felt confident they could resign him.
Scal said it was a good move by DA to not trade for him since 1st round picks have longer contracts and he probably wouldn’t be able to retain Evans with all the other contract considerations (aka Tyreke would’ve been a 3month rental). That said, he was surprised at Memphis’ confidence to resign him since Tyreke was only signed to a 1-year
Mannix then said that Memphis could use their MLE.
Scal said he thinks Tyreke will be offered more than MLE.
I forget what Mike said but I remember Scal saying as well that the Memphis team, as currently constructed, probably isn’t going to be the Memphis team next year anyway. So they could clean house and then sign Tyreke to a contract bigger than MLE.
Didn’t notice any tension here. I think there was more tension during the Cleveland flip-flopping exchange. And Mannix calling out Scal with “how many more teams are you afraid to face in the 1st round?”
