Quote
There has been an ongoing debate about what the Cleveland Cavaliers will do with their 2018 first round pick that was acquired from the Brooklyn Nets in the deal that sent Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics last offseason. Some experts and analysts think the Cavs should hang on to the pick in the event of a LeBron James departure, while others are open to dealing it — under proper circumstances, of course.

With the NBA’s trade deadline looming on the horizon (Feb. 8), teams around the league are keeping a keen eye on players who could become available. The Cavs are no different, but would they consider trading their coveted first round pick from the Nets? Perhaps, but it sounds like they’d prefer it be for a long-term solution rather than a quick fix.

Via Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com:

“I keep hearing the Cavs absolutely won’t trade the Brooklyn draft pick. That’s not true. I’ve heard from top league sources the Cavs will do it — but not for a short-term answer such as DeAndre Jordan. That’s because Jordan can become a free agent at the end of the season.

“The Cavs would trade the pick for a younger player who is under team control for a few years. But they are willing to deal their own first-round pick in 2018 for the right short-term fix.”

Whether or not the Cavs will make a move before this season’s trade deadline remains to be seen. With Kevin Love out of the lineup for roughly eight weeks due to a fractured bone in his left hand, the Cavs could go after another big in the open market, but that doesn’t mean they’ll have to use their pick from the Nets to do so.

The Cavs, now 30-20 and first in the Central Division standings, will be back in action on Saturday night, as they’re scheduled to host the Houston Rockets inside Quicken Loans Arena. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. EST with ABC having live broadcast coverage.

I find this interesting, because lets be honest, a DeAndre Jordan + Lou Williams package IMHO would help thread the needle in a series against Golden State especially if Love returns healthy and Isaiah is close to fully healthy himself by April.

BUT judging by reports coming out now, it doesn't seem they want to do that (both are rentals), and frankly I don't see any other move CLE could make that would thread the needle for them in a series against Golden State (especially with Cousins now out for the year).

I'm starting to think even the Cavaliers FO realizes Lebron is leaving after this season and don't want to trade away the Nets Pick for rental(s) who probably only increase their chance of beating GSW in the Finals from 20% to 40%... (still no guarantee).

Obviously things change, but I found this interesting. They should be looking at "win-now" mode, but seems the FO now realizes LBJ is leaving and is hesitating at dealing the BKN pick now (one of their only prized assets left other than Lebron, who could bolt next summer).

They could deal the BKN Pick + Isaiah for 2 years of Kemba, but does that really help them that much?? And in that case, the Irving trade essentially becomes Kyrie for Kemba, Crowder, and Zizic. Not too bad from the Celtics side when you look at it.

Aaron Gordon? Kemba Walker/Dwight Howard? Hassan Whiteside? John Wall? Damian Lillard of CJ McCullom?

Who else has been rumored to be available? Who else would be interested in the pick over other assets?

LOL dang. Feel bad for Isaiah. He doesn't deserve this.

I mean didn't he just get back from injury too?? And while he may not be the solution on defense, lets be honest, that team is just not constructed well. Even Crowder has no role there.

This isn't new. This has been the Cavs position all season.

Long term is the key word because I wouldn't put it past LeBron to make them commit to a short-term solution to give him the best chance to win a ring while he's there. Then scoop the franchise up in four or five years for a discount price while it suffers the repercussions of what they did for him.

Aaron Gordon is an intriguing option for them.

Remember when Cavs fans thought this trade was a highway robbery for them because they acquired Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, BKN 2018, and a second rounder? They got a 5-for-1 deal.

Cue Danny Ainge picking up the phone call from Cavs GM and saying "So, you want Marcus Smart....it's gonna cost you a first round pick, you know...."

If you are Portland and Cleveland offers you IT, Kevin Love, Shumpert, Frye, and Brooklyn 2018 for Damian Lillard, Evan Turner, Nurkic and Portland 2018 do you say no?

Portland seems completely locked in cap hell and mediocrity. Love and IT seem like a much better fit in the Pacific North West. Lillard gives Lebron a player that would at least consider staying in Cleveland.

Both teams essentially get what they want. Portland gets solid assets in the pick and Love, get to shed Turners terrible contract, and can rehab IT properly in an environment where championship contention is not on the line.

Nurkic will give Cleveland some size replacement for Love, and he can likely re-sign with Portland next season if he wanted to.

Of course they say no. That'd be a terrible trade for them.

Why not? He absolutely does. He talked quite a bit about brinks trucks and superstar money, and doesn’t that put a target on your back? Not to mention he’s been divisive in that locker room as well.

Here is a fun trade that will get me flamed perhaps! 😁

This is based on assumption Lebron agrees to stay for 4 more years - works in trade machine😂😂

Boston- Lebron James-will resign, kuzma
Lakers- Kyrie, Yab, lakers pick/kings pick back
Cavs- Tatum, Ingram, lopez, memphis pick

Must  be the wine...Would you do this trade? All in with Lebron, Hayeard, Horford, Brown and Rozier as pg.....Cavs reboot and get tatum and ingram, sal dump and memphis pick..lakers get superstar in Kyrie and top pick this or next year....

😁I might actually not do this as I love Tatum amd Kyrie but we might win a few titles with our new starting lineup...haha!!
