Wow. Solid pickup.

And Danny STILL managed to lowball him by only giving up $5 mill of the $8.4 we had to give. Way to not bid against ourselves as many teams would've done.

How is this a low ball?

There is only half a season left and he was bought out

Plus Celts offered the highest amount

Because we had $8.4 million and it could only be spent on one player.  We gave him a bit more than half of that.

We definitely offered the most, we just didn't overkill and give the max we could.

Which is why I said earlier I really don't think Monroe is in Danny's long term plans. This is likely just half season rental.

Only using 5 of the 8.3million keeps the C's 3.6mil under the Luxury tax. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the 3.6mil is needed as wiggle room for a future trade.

Keith Smith @KeithSmithNBA

After signing Monroe to a reported $5M contract, the Celtics will have approximately $3.6M in space under the Luxury Tax. Just enough wiggle room to bring in another player or two and still avoid the tax.

Keith Smith @KeithSmithNBA

Avoiding the luxury tax now is big for Boston, because they are almost certain to pay it in the near future. No one wants to be subject to the repeater tax, so this helps Boston potentially avoid that down the line. Had Monroe taken the full DPE, they may not have stayed under.

Bobby Marks @BobbyMarks42

The Greg Monroe $5M contract for 10 weeks of work with the Celtics( plus the playoffs) is equal to a player signing a $13M contract before the season started.

Boston will have non-Bird rights on Monroe after this season when he's a free agent. Barring using the Non-Taxpayer exception, that limits the Celtics to paying him a salary of $6 million next summer.

Yes, that was my initial suspicion of why we didn't use the full amount. It clearly benefits us not to be a tax paying team this season. Best to avoid being a repeat tax payer in future seasons.

I gotta assume that Tyreke is coming next (Baynes traded).
Baynes isn't going anywhere.
I think you're right. Baynes and Monroe together allow the C's to keep Horford in the roaming role where he is most effective.  If the C's are going after a wing/guard next they expect them to be sending out some of Nadar, Yabs, Smart and a pick or two.

It sure would be great if Hayward was ready to come back for 15 mpg of effective play the rest of the year.

I was not overly excited about prospect but I am warming to the idea of our new giant on our team! Here is hoping Boston and Monroe are a match made in heaven. I look forward to having some bigs on the floor in the playoffs.

I guess players do want to come to Boston...imagine that!

Go Celtics!

If he can somehow get Evans....Boston is stacked on the bench
I know we're invested in Brown and...in a way...Baynes, but really Tyrek Evans might start over Brown. Evans is a very good player having a very good season.

Monroe might not, but probably should start over Baynes. Monroe would fit very well next to Horford.

What a huge nab for us, especially since it only cost us Hayward’s ankle!  :P

Seriously, though, if we add a Williams or Reke in addition to Moose, look out NBA, because we have a legitimate shot of hanging Banner 18 this year!

Do you genuinely believe that? You could add both and we wouldn't beat GS imo.  IF we got past LBJ (still doubtful imo), I'd expect a gentleman's sweep at best.  Our best player may not bew the 3rd best player in a series against GS.  It really isn't even close.

Have you watched any of Cleveland lately? We’d clearly be the favorites (along with Toronto) in that series right now, and that’s before even discussing Love’s injury and us adding Monroe, let alone the possibility of Hayward coming back or us adding a Tyreke or Lou.

As for GS, I don’t understand why people think they’re invincible. We’ve *literally* played them point for point this year in our two matchups. They’re one of the best teams in decades, but they are beatable in the right matchup, which we happen to matchup very well with them. Sure, they’ll be favored over us, but people acting like it wouldn’t even be a series haven’t been watching the same basketball the rest of us have this season.

I have to agree, we aren't winning a series against GS. I think we lose in five, although they are all close games. GS is literally one of the best basketball teams ever with 4 all stars and 2 MVP level players. Evans and Monroe aren't even on the floor in crunch time in thatseries. They help us in the wast, not GS. That said I'd be happy to eat crow, or crow pie, or crow nuggets on this one.

One possible overlooked part of playing Monroe more than Baynes -- Monroe doesn't foul nearly as much. That's less time in the bonus for other teams.

Although teams shoot a higher percentage at the rim against him, they take less shots at the rim against him.

That stat could mean nothing, it could mean that he doesn't try hard, or it could mean that his positioning prevents them from getting to the rim more often, even if when they do they score at a higher level.

Lots of talk on this thread about how this probably doesn't move the needle v. GSW.   Probably true.  However, GSW has a pretty tough road to the Finals playing 2 of Minny, Houston, SA and OKC.   GSW could be challenged this year and certainly could be beaten up a little (if not ousted).  Player for player, there is no playoff rotation like GSW, but injuries happen and... Houston, OKC or SA (with Leonard) actually have a puncher's chance v. GSW.   It is not preposterous to think the East representative could give GSW (or whoever survives the West) a series.

Anyway, Monroe adds versatility and depth.  Tyreke would do the same.  And Hayward would provide even more.   9-man playoff rotation of KI, Al, JB, JT, GM, MS, Tyreke, Morris, Hayward with situational play by TR, Baynes and Theis -- sounds pretty solid to me.   Maybe not quite top-heavy enough, but dang deep and versatile.

Looking forward to seeing what Brad can do with Greg over the nexr 2 months.  GET TYREKE!

This is how I see it too. OKC seem especially built specifically to take on GSW, so that would be an interesting matchup.

I reckon with Tyreke we could have a legit shot at #18. It would be hard, because of Golden State, but we could still do it.

We just acquired a 27 year old double-double machine who can rebound, pass, set screens and score inside as well as run the floor well and is durable as hell FOR NOTHING.

People will be very surprised by his north/south speed. (Granted his lateral quickness is why he is not a great switcher on D) The guy can motor and has decent handles for a big.

Witness and enjoy and look forward to an underrated guy coming our way:

Yeah, I’m pretty excited to see how he’ll look in Brad’s system on a much better team. With how it has raised the game of other players, I can’t wait to see what Moose looks like in Boston.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.
