I have read/heard many, or to say too many times, about Big AL's future dip in production, more specifically in his last 2 years on this contract.
I understand that he will be a 32-year-old then, but I am truly convinced that he will still be productive, and an above average player. I feel like many fans and journalists are using the age/production projection too literate. Ok, we get it, players get older and their performance suffers due to their more pronounced physical limitations, the ones that are not as exposed when they are playing at a young age.

Can you please explain to me how/in what manner, will Al's offensive game suffer in the next 2 years?
1) First of all, he can pass, dribble, shot and rarely tries to do the things he can't. The first three skills (skillsets) mentioned are so rare to find combined in a single big man (try to do it, just to understand this uniqueness) that I would dismiss the idea that he won't be a positive factor on that end, excluding any severe injury. Also, these skills rarely drop off due to age.
2) Boris Diaw, a good comparison IMO (weaker shooter, about the same as a post-up threat on switches and a notch better passer on the move. He doesn't set the screens as well (in our favorite DH'S action) as AL. Also, he is slower and less athletic than Al (to say the least, he is built like a pear). Diaw is also worse rim protector and not as switchy big as Horford.
That same Boris Diaw (AL Horford lite) started on numerous playoffs/finals and was a key guy for the Spurs.
3) I will take into account that Horford now has (and will have) elite teammates, which will certainly make his game easier and more efficient/versatile. I foresee that trend for at least the next 5 years.
4) Defensively, Horford was always a smart defender, just not as physical. I don't see much change in that regard. His effort level is good, team defense will grind and he won't be an exception to that rule. Sure he is not Rudy Gobert or AD, but the point is that he won't drop defensively to crater like proportions, just a minor/if any dip.
5) I also expect Al on the minute diet, (minute fasting to be more exact. 2300/2400 mins played in the regular season) because Celtics will preserve him for April/June.

So, can someone explain to me how will Al drop so much within next 18-24 months to be ineffective? Is it because he will jump 0.8 inches less? or maybe cause he will run 100 meters 0.04 secs slower?
I will remind us that he was the best center in the eastern NBA playoffs last year and probably only Draymond Green (played much less the five position than in the previous 2 playoffs) did better than him overall in that period.
Would I pay Al as much as we did, the max? - yes, of course, he can play and other All-stars want to play with him (IT, GH, KI), he will age gracefully and is a calm locker room presence.

Al Horford will be a productive player through the rest of his contract (barring injury) but his scoring average is bound to drop this season with more scoring options on this team now.

Ok, his scoring average will probably drop. He also never had this much offensive talent playing beside him. That doesn't mean he won't be able to hit an open shot after 2 years, he just plays with better players.

His offense will remain consistent. Bigs who can shoot age well on offense.

His defense & rebounding will continue to decline. Already undersized, Horford will be punished greatly for his continued decline in jumping (already seen in rebounding) and speed (already less effective on perimeter defense than he was a few years ago).

Not only this, I'm going to double down on your logic and say that Al will improve on his production from last year by commanding the ball more, but possibly more importantly, he should really step into the veteran leadership role. With IT gone there is a big vacuum to fill in terms of which guys need step up and lead. Word out of camp is that Marcus has been vocal in the huddle but Al seems like the rock in the center of it all.

Quote
“With Marcus Smart and Terry Rozier and Jaylen [Brown] and myself, we understand it. We’ve lived it,” Horford said. “And the way that we play and the way we’ll carry ourselves, I feel like it would be contagious and the guys will get it.”

I remember reading that Al had trouble finding his way in the locker room for much of last year. Reading between the lines, one could imagine that being paid so much more than guys like Crowder and Bradley despite producing arguably less than both early on probably lead to some feelings of resentment.

We all saw how Jae took to Hayward coming to town last year and with all the Brinks truck talk and Bradley concerned about his contract, it must have been a weird dynamic for Al being the new guy making roughly more than the other 4 starters combined. After Al's playoffs last year though he's now finds himself as the most proven and accomplished Celtic on the team and after the extreme roster turnover, will command the respect of the whole locker room.

Been going through Narcos lately and wouldn't doubt the we are about to see the emergence of Don Horford. It started by taking the guy's out to dinner the other night and offering guidance over the summer to guys like Theis and Jaylen. Like the OP I think Al will keep up his elite production well into his mid 30's and can't wait to see what this guy can bring to the organization this year.

I suspect Al will age very well. In the last two seasons he has added a 3pt shot to his game and is now more open to playing the Center position regularly. These two developments along with his very high basketball IQ and elite passing ability should allow him to match his current production well past his current contract.

His offensive  productivity (shooting and passing) will be fine,  its his defense and contract that will be the issue. If he accepts an off the bench big role in a few years with a decent home town discount he will be very valuable until 36 or 37 years old. 2 things must happen first.

1 is get a couple more talented legit big men via whatever means possible to play ahead of him.

2 is start next year at latest to restrict his minutes at the 5 to reduce wear and tear.

His later years can be as a 20mpg quality backup big  type player. A couple of finals appearances and a championship will probably  be needed to persuade him to accept this role  and these terms at a minimum.

Al will have a better year this season and the stats won't show it.

Al is the best passing and shooting center in the league.  The effect this has on our whole offense is dramatic.

I am following the points may be down but importance to team is as great as ever line. Al will be 'big' next season.
