The Crossover  by Andrew Sharp  "The Kyrie Trade Was The Only Move Left For Celtics" out 2 hrs ago---Sports Illustrated
Enjoy this interpretation and why the Celts  had to move on Kylie and give up the Nets pick
Why we missed out or failed to pursue  george
Why we passed on Butler
And timeline and Hayward
Isaiah and hip and max

Is there a link somewhere?  Anyway, I am 100% on board with the trade, as I was not willing to pay IT the max (and I don't think Cleveland is either).  So it really comes down to the nets pick and Crowder for Kyrie and that's a slam dunk all day everyday.  Also think that Kyrie is a significant upgrade to IT.

As DA said, it aligns the team's timeline and makes us better now, and into the future.  Moving Crowder gives more time for Tatum and Brown as well.

So really, what's not to like?

If IT is never the same player again this does dramatically change my feelings on the value of the trade. We could have really screwed the cavs.

Of all the stories I've read on the Kyrie trade, this makes the most sense.

Actually, it might make too much sense - it presents getting Kyrie as the only option.

Very well written in any case.

Interesting take by Sharp, whom I generally respect and enjoy. Not sure If I completely agree that, for example, Jimmy Butler is a clear favorite in SF rankings over Gordon Hayward, nor that John Wall is clearly a better PG. But even if we say those three players listed (GH, KI and Horford) are 6th in their respective positions... that's not bad! I'll take three positional No. 6's. How many teams have a guy in the top 6 of each position? Golden State.... that's it?

EDIT: Top 6 guy in each of those three positions, not in each of the 5 positions.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I mean, it is an article on the Cs, but it is just one man's opinion. He doesn't really delve into the importance of the timing on the Butler/George deals and he dismisses Hayward, Kyrie, and Horford as NOT top 5 at their positions pretty easily. Are Gasol, J. Butler, and Wall definitively better than Horford, Hayward, and Kyrie? Is Harden even still a PG with Paul in town?

However, I do agree when he discusses Ainge's dilemma on dealing with an inured IT, why George might not have wanted to re-sign while playing a decent portion of the year with Rozier leading the way, and there not being many more options to acquire a young star.

Danny chose a direction, it extended our window, and we have an exciting team to watch now and in the future.

Probably some truth in it. DA did mention (celtics.com interview?) that he offered more or less the same package for other top players before and didn't get a bite.

IMO Sharp addressed your point adequately. It's a bet that may or may not work.

"Danny Ainge is betting on Brad Stevens's system and his ability to develop young players into quality rotation contributors, not to mention Kyrie's ability to headline a title contender and attract one more star."

You are right that only GSW has a clearly better starting 5, but the separation the Celtics have from teams such as Washington and Toronto is pretty thin.

One thing I don't understand: why do people argue that IT is likely to be hampered by his hip *and* likely to receive a $30 million per year contract? Isn't it one or the other?

Everything in the article made sense, but brought nothing new that we didn't already know. Also, I wouldn't say the Kyrie Irving trade was the only move left for the Celtics. I would have put it like this, "In an offseason filled with possible trade scenarios involving their last Brooklyn pick, the best possible scenario came from a rival". If I'm not mistaken, didn't Chicago and Indiana want 2 out of the 3 between Jaylen Brown, the 2017 and 2018 Brooklyn picks? Obviously, Danny ended up turning that 2017 Brooklyn pick into Tatum and the 2018 Lakers pick. The point is, those two teams supposedly wanted two of those blue chip assets for either George or Butler. Cleveland happened to be possibly the first team to realistically see the value of the 2018 Nets pick, and were willing to settle for just one of those blue chip assets.

But Butler you had to give up assets, where hayward was obviously a FA-it was a concern that hayward would not come with Butler here and he postulates that paul georges agent possibly voiced his clients desire to move the following year-
Danny avoided a very sticky situation with isaiah and free agency-i truly feel for avery-nobody feels sorry for turner, crowder gets a shot at a ring,-no matter what happens isaiah had his time in celtics history, kelly got paid in miami
Danny is the Celtics caretaker -he had concerns, isaiah got a little big headed in his back the brinks truck routine and it backfired.

I guess there's still the possibility that he recovers fine this season, plays great and thus "proves" he's fine, gets his Brinks deal ... then next year reinjures the hip, signifying that he might always be susceptible to such reoccurrences of the injury.
