Like the others, I didn't hear it the way you did. ISTM, he answered a few questions in a way that his reason for wanting to leave couldn't be taken as negativity toward James or the Cleveland ownership.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
The questions were asked about him and he responded. In fact he made it about the team when they tried to make it about him.

It was more of a Kyrie Irving presser than a Gordon Hayward Presser but I think Hayward is fine with that.

We have two bonafied All Stars now and Horford is an All Star caliber big man.

Get excited.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

i was so impressed with the whole conference. He was so eloquent and fluid, said all the right things. I have no idea what are you talking about. Some of the questions were referred to him as an individual, and of course he is going to be talking about himself.
I never really paid attention to KI before coming here but he surprised me in a good way.

now that i said that, i just don't get the players anymore. Some(KD) turns the world against him to leave a dominant club to win a championship, and now you got (KI) who doesn't care that we would play in the finals for the next 3 years or so because he wants to grow as a player and a person. Talk about being a GM these days...

Your cherrypicking Kyrie's me first quotes out of the context of what was asked of him. He had plenty more to say than about himself but gave poignant, well thought out answer when asked about his personal journey.

One of Kyrie's best quotes was something to the effect of "What one player can carry a team?" he then goes on to discuss his excitement for the team concept from top to bottom.

Distinctly heard him talk about the franchise and its status in the NBA and how much it is about the team rather than one player. I only watched about a third of the conference, must have changed in the last twenty minutes.

I just completed a round of interviews for a position I am hiring for.  Of course you want to hear "team player" and get a sense for the person's capacity for collaboration, getting along with others and commitment to the organization.  But you also want to hear about the individual's skills, their thirst first for learning, drive for betterment.  Actually, if they can't speak fluidly about self and what they bring to the table, they have no chance.

Irving comes across as a unique thinker, surprisingly deep for a guy who questions the shape of Earth or the existence of dinosaurs.  I am a little worried that his wacky beliefs are indicative of mental health issues, but maybe they just reflect a sense of humor and a playfully provocative personality.  I think he'll have a very interesting time with what seems to be a.team with a high number of intellectually strong and curious players and coaches.  I expect there will be both friction and camaraderie.   Just as there was with Bird, McHale, Parish, DJ...

This.  Kyrie's talked about himself because the presser was about him (and Hayward).  The press asked him about himself and how HE felt.  If anything, he was able to turn around the questions and talk about the team.  That's EXACTLY what you want to hear.
