Odd.  He didn't take a player option for 6.5 million and then ends up signing for 4.3 million.  Obviously Boston is better than Detroit, but it appears he vastly overestimated his market.

Think the Pistons had stacked up a number of bigs.  After they hired AB instead of paying KCP what he wanted, not a great surprise Baynes getting same treatment.

Sorry to sound stupid and clueless, but can someone give me insight into Baynes?

4.4 rebounds a game only? Is that mainly because of Drummond being on the team too?

And are we officially no longer interested in guys like Dedmon?

Dedmon couldn't be had for 4.3m.  Baynes a strong, physical presence that likes to muck it up in the paint.  The one time I saw him play last season, he got whacked in that broken nose and just laughed it off.  He's an animal.

Good physical presence inside and definitely adds to our toughness. He's a traditional Big, which will allow lineups with Horford at the 4...which I think is his strongest position...

Also I think this confirms that Zizic will be riding pine for a while

Baynes is technically not an unrestricted free agent yet but all signs point to the big-man declining his player option.

As we mentioned in an earlier story, Baynes’ free agency comes in layers.

It’ll all come down to the balance of his place in the market, and the market itself.

An NBA executive noted that in a market filled with bigs who are either restricted free agents or locked in to their respective teams, Baynes will likely be the best unrestricted free agent big in the league.

While that’s a bonus, the other side is the fact that because most teams already have a centre locked in, the market is small for big men.

“I’d say $US7-10 million, depending on several things,” the executive said of Baynes’ value.

When it comes to teams that could be interested in Baynes’ services, the executive mentioned Charlotte (notwithstanding cap space), Dallas, Brooklyn (if the team moves Brook Lopez), and potentially locations like Houston or Boston.

While Baynes’ value is high, the limited market could cost the 30-year-old around $US3-5 million a year.

Baynes averaged 4.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game during his 2016-17 stint with the Detroit Pistons, shooting 51.3 percent from the field in 15.5 minutes per game.

The 30-year-old’s rebounding presence and screen-setting will be his most valuable assets in the free agency and will overshadow what look to be bland numbers.

It is in large part due to Drummond both grabbing the rebounds and the minutes.

Baynes only played about 14 mpg last year.

Baynes can rebound and is tough as nails with some attitude.

4.4 rebounds in just 15 mins per game backing up Drummond. He also apparently finished some games because Drummond can't shoot free throws.

He opted out of a $6 mil deal thinking he could get more and Danny landed him for the $4.3 room exception.  This is the big body rebounder we needed.

Coulda had Jahil Okafor. Instead we got this 31 year old
Baynes doesn't necessarily exclude Okafor. Ainge could still trade for him if he really wanted him on this team.
Jack of all trades, master of none.

Ainge needs to have at least one man bun on the roster.

Good job, Danny!

Seriously I like this kid. I go to the games early and take notice im of those out there early working on their game. Baynes was one of those guys, looked extremely focused and professional. He should fill his role nicely.

Yep. This is what Lowe and some others have been talking about. A lot of agents are going to get fired this year because they were telling their players that this summer is going to be like last summer and everyone is getting paid big money. But it wasn't true and players are even taking paycuts now.

Good signing. He's a burly guy who can play inside and bang with the centers Horford doesn't want to. His rebounding % has been around 16 which is pretty good. He's a good FT shooter for his size and seems to have good hands around the basket. The C's won't be running any plays for him but that's ok. He's also a Detroit guy so he and Morris can help each other get acclimated to Boston.

It's hard to find highlights of the guy but here's a link of a game from last year where he had 20.
