One of the teams interested in Smart is the Knicks, according to the New York Daily News. The Knicks have about $15 million in cap space and Smart makes just $4.5 million this season and then becomes a restricted free agent in 2018.

Just saw this.

I'm not a fan of teaming Smart up with Porzingus within our conference.   We already built one potential problem in Philly...

I would rather trade them Bradley, perhaps for Courtney Lee and a future pick?

Lee is signed for $11.8m for three years, and would be a good vet to have sharing time with Jaylen at 2 guard.  Then the Knicks can use AB as a win now move to appease Melo and have contact flexibility with him this offseason.

I'm not too worried about our bigs situation.
Honestly expect Tatum to be firmly in that rotation from day one.

You're missing the point. We have to go down in salary not up. C's are trying to open up more cap space to sign Hayward. As far as playing against Smart for years to come, not very scary IMO apparently C's aren't worried about it either. Some of you guys have built up Smart in your own minds to be this unbelievable player. I can't figure it out!

There are so many possible ways this can go down. From reading between the lines on rumors and just wild specualtion this is what I have come up with.

#1 Trade Rozier and Jackson for Hayward S&T and  2nd rd pick

#2 Trade Crowder for Hayward and a 1st rd pick

#3 Trade Crowder and Bradley for Hayward and Favors

#4 Trade Smart to Knicks for Hernengomez and a 1st, then Sign Hayward, then trade Hernendomez, Bradley, Crowder and a non nets pick to Memphis for Gasol

My guess would be option 1 or 2 happens.

The idea that the Knicks will give you #1 AND Hernangomez for Smart is hilarious. But then again, so is the idea that you'll turn around and trade him for the calcified remains of Marc Gasol.

Also, no-one is giving you first-round picks for the favor of taking Crowder's salary off of your hands.

The Knicks FO may be silly, but this proposal is absolutely crazy.

1 or 2 are the likeliest of these 4 particular options.  just want Danny to get this over with.  dread the possibility of losing Smart instead of Crowder.

Chances are you lose Smart next year anyway. C's can't get Hayward this year and sing IT, AB and Smart next year. Even if they could it would be foolish, not enough minutes to go around unless you're going to play super small ball all season.

So if we clear Jae's salary to sign Hayward, that leaves about 3 mil in cap room.

Marcus makes 3.4 , so that leaves us about 6.5 -7 mil(depending how much Salary Jae would clear).

If we send AB 8.8 mil + 3 mil in cap room, we could be taking back around 12 mil in salary.

The reason I think this is important is because I don't see the C's signing all 3 of AB, IT and Smart.

So a smart thing you can do now is trade one of AB or Smart for a salary that is locked in for 2 or 3 years at less money than it would take to re-sign AB or Smart next year.

Does this make sense to anyone else?
I get where you are going with this. So if we trade Jae and Smart that's $12 million and if we get back a player making about $9.5 million that clears the cap space to keep Rozier and be able to sign Hayward. So who fits in that salary slot?

I've been thinking along the same line. Hopefully get us back a very serviceable big but one of the problems with moving AB and Smart is you would need another guard too.

Steps in Tony Allen?

Trade Crowder to the Kings for WCS...  He's out of the conference and you get a cheap big. Then sign another big and call it a day.

Probably have to send picks too and/or Rozier

This will, in fact, ADD salary. So it's only possible after Hayward signs, and is not a facilitating move for the trade.

Umm, we're trying to CREATE cap space not LOSE it.  Lee's salary is way too high and would hamper our free agency flexibility over the next 3 years.

Hernangomez makes the most sense as a trade target because of his very low 1.5m cap salary over the next 3 seasons.  Porzingis would be preferred though if the Knicks would take 1 of AB/Crowder + Smart and say a couple of 1st round picks in return.
