tatum does not look like a volume shooter at all aka carmelo

There's more to their games than how many shots they take. And not all of those 17 shots Tatum took tonight were terrific looks. And just for the sake of it, the first couple of seasons Carmelo was putting up between 16 and 20 shots a night as the primary option for his team.

No. They are diff in many ways

Anthony does have a quicker release and he is trigger happy

Tatum already plays better defense just by effort alone. Anthony is a pathetic defender

Tatum dunks is also something Anthony rarely or ever does.

Tatum reminds me of PG13.  If he even becomes a poor man version of PG13, Danny scored a big one here

Carmelo never dunks? Did you see him play before he joined the Knicks? Even with the Knicks he's had some posters. He's not a slouch athlete and in many ways was a better athlete than Tatum at the same age. As for the quicker release, I guess maybe? But what about their post-up games and step backs? Quick release or not, that footwork is comparable. Not sure where you could come up with a PG13 comparison; are you familiar with his athleticism and his reliance on the 3 ball? Tatum's most common comparisons coming out of Duke were Parker and Melo, two players who play nothing like PG13.
Carmelo was definitely thicker and a tad slower at the same age but stronger. Melo was a dabg good athlete through his early years. I see the likeness between their games. Difference is I think Tatum will grow into a more athletic and strwamlined body than Melo and be quicker longer.

Tatum does have to quicken up his release but because its so high he will still have success with his mid range game. Gotta extend that range though.

Anthony is an annoying volume shooter and a poor defender....  Tatum is not like that

Anthony does have a step back but he doesn't have a high release like Tatum.

Why I say Tatum is closer to PG13 are their physical profile similarity (broad shoulders, smooth athlete),  high release , iq, effort

Carmelo was a way different player coming out of Syracuse than the player he developed into. He was drafted at 220 pounds and had an elite physical profile and athleticism combo. Carmelo didn't have the flash that other upper tier athletes had (i.e., LeBron), but he was a freak in his own right. I think you're on to something suggesting that Tatum could have longevity in his quickness and athleticism; that has certainly not been the case for Carmelo, although I'd say he's learned to cope for his decline in athleticism by becoming more of a power forward.

Okay. I think there needs to be more than similar physical build and perceived "effort" to make a player comparison, but I get it. I think Carmelo's reputation has been dragged through the mud too many times for people to remember how great he once was. Certainly not a bad comparison. Maybe people feel more comfortable with Jabari Parker.

We shouldn't be putting too much stock into SL, but there's a slight difference between someone like KO, a 3-year college player, and Tatum, a 19 year-old, dominating SL. Just look at Kris Dunn's success last year.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

LOL at that Pump the brakes comment. Scottie Pippen has arrived!!

Seriously though, he will no doubt have a poor shooting night here and there, but the kid definitely knows how to play good basketball. Really comes down to psychological matters: his attitude, confidence, willingness to learn, willingness to give the game everything etc..

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
very impressive for a 19 year old.
Seems like hes very composed for his age, much like Jaylen.

Jaylen destroyed these guys but it's important to remember that most of these guys aren't NBA caliber defenders except for a few who are barely NBA caliber defenders.

I just can't wait to see these guys in 2 years time.

Read that last line again. One more time.

I would count Fultz in the group of guys that didn't look like NBA calibre defenders. Just wasn't exposed for it by our p----poor small guard crew out there.

Seems like a snipe from me who follows a team with Isaiah in it. Just an observation.

Um, no. Anthony was never considered an explosive athlete. He had a great first step because he had the strength Tatum right now lacks. He came into the league about 230 while Tatum is maybe 205.

The reason why Tatum is compared to Anthony is they are isolation scorers that can face-up, score in the post and thrive on making tough, two-point jumpers. Once Tatum adds weight he will almost be a Carmelo clone. The Pierce comparisons are a little lazy cause Tatum is bigger. He might end up 6'9" 240.
