This trade is excellent for both teams.  It had nothing to do with making their respective teams better for next year.

It's all about....

1. LA clearing cap space for 2 potential MAX players (PG13 and Lebron)
2.  Brooklyn starting over with DRuss even at the expense of Mozgov contract

If law of averages catches up to Lopez and he gets injured for a prolonged period of time and they do not get George this year and wait until 2018, we could be looking at two top 5 picks in 18 which would be insane. Now, if somehow the Nets flip Russel and their next 3 available number 1 picks for a superstar and the Lakers get George, we could be looking at no top 5 picks next year and potentially only a 19 from the Kings. Fun stuff! Now, if the Lakers win the lottery next year, we get to see the Sixers get a record three straight first picks in a draft...the thought of that makes me want to puke for a week straight.

So to clear space you give up Russell and 27th pick?

Paul George deal probably coming aswell..

I think so, although you wonder why Indy would do a deal unless #2 or Ingram is on the table.

If it's true that PG's agent is going around telling teams he absolutely won't stay if they trade for him now no matter what, it HAS to drive down value. I don't care how gutsy of a GM you are. If you give up valuable assets, you come up short of a championship, and Paul really does bolt, that's a failure.

Lakers may be able to get him with some ridiculous combo of Clarkson, Deng, and/or Randle if other teams are lowballing.

They weren't the ones that gave Mozgov and Deng those lousy contracts.  Dumping a crappy 3 year/54M contract is expensive.  We got an extra 1st to take on Wallace's bad contract.

No brainer!!!

The title needs to be corrected.  The Lakers got the 27th pick from the Nets.  So now they have #2, #27 and #28.

To me, it signals LA is committing to a new direction under Pelinka and Magic.

Russell been perfectly mediocre his first two seasons, he's supposedly got maturity problems, and quite frankly - maybe the new regime isn't as high on his potential as the old regime was.

The Lakers will probably take Ball at #2 and then trade some lowball package for PG. Next offseason, they can pitch Lebron with Paul George, Lonzo Ball, and Brandon Ingram. It's not a 100% fool proof plan, but we've seen crazier scenarios play out.

They didn't have to for Lopez and overpay for him is the point

If Pelinka had a brain he would have given up only Russell or the 27th , plus Mozgov for another expiry contract

Let James and George go west. Boston runs the east.

I'm really really glad Nets took this long to straighten out their front office...

Nets get worse in the short term, doesn't matter how good they are after 2018. But this trade is a win for them. Also glad Ainge and co was smart enough to protect that Lakers pick after 5.
