I think it was good value for the pick. I believe we have a higher ceiling after the trade than we did before it. But it's also a big gamble; we have a lower floor now too.
Here's the thing: all four of the top guys have star-level upside. If Fultz's potential is James Harden, then Jackson could become Kawhi, Tatum could become something between Pierce and Melo, and Ball could be Kidd. I think the big thing that separates Fultz from the other three is floor - I think he's a lot closer to a sure thing.
To add to that, we're banking on a young, talented team continuing to fail AND favorable luck with the lottery. We're protected to an extent, but that protection takes the form of another uncertainty - we're then banking on a team continuing to fail two years from now... and again, favorable luck with the lottery.
So we have more upside now, but also more risk. Would I have done the deal? No. But I think I get it, and I'm okay with it.
