I have to agree with this. Who in the West even has a chance...Minny maybe in 3 years, but the Spurs are getting older and Utah may lose Hayward.

This is why you have no chance if you don't go into the lux tax and pay a penalty. Get 4 top players and fill in the rest with guys willing to take less money. Drafting good will do it but it will take years for them to gain playoff experience.

If Ainge does things right we could be looking at a Celtics vs Warriors Finals for years.

Golden State won't survive its current iteration when the current contracts expire.  They just can't afford to pay everyone.  I would expect Thompson and perhaps Green to just be too pricey to keep going forward.

I am glad he said "pencil"...because 5 more years is a long time to project out.

And Durant turns 29 this year...and he's been kind of fragile.

Yep. Whichever guy they don't max will leave. Plus, someone else out west will strike it rich with someone in the draft and challenge them. If SA found a great player to match with Kawhi, SA will be right there with them.

They've already made 3 straight.  I don't see another team with a young core that will challenge them in the next 5 years.  Unless Durant pulls a Lebron and wins a title or 2 in GS, then decides to come back to OKC to help them win their first title.

How does GS keep that team together without entering luxury tax or seriously gutting their depth??

same

between Curry/Thompson/Durant/Green one of those 4 if not two will need to go because of salary. I am unsure who it will be, I'd like to think for starters, Curry/Green/Durant stays, and Thompson somehow gets traded

What a moronic thing to say. Whenever I hear him call a GSW game I can hear the weird love he has for them in his voice, but this is pretty ridiculous.

A) It's going to be incredibly difficult for them to maintain this core going forward - all 4 of their star players will get offered max contracts

and

B) There is no way that they are this dominant when Curry, KD and Klay are all in their mid to late 30's

Why you people think that GS can't sign them all? They have bird rights on them except for Durant. And if they keep getting to the finals. they will sign them all and they will pay whatever luxury taxes they need to pay. Also they don't need to resign them in the same year.

Can someone explain in numbers why they wouldn't be able to resign them all with salary cap for the next 5 years?

Sure, they probably can't keep everyone due to luxury tax. But the scary thing is they can lose Klay for nothing and still be the best team in the NBA.

I think they're willing to pay the tax, and a good deal of it.  They make a ton of money at the gate, are raising season ticket prices by 20% next year (with a 33,000 person wait-list, so they'll sell them) and have the highest local TV ratings in the NBA.

That said, their depth will be somewhat gutted this summer if KD opts out and gets the max, since they'll have to go under the cap to maintain him.  So this year, the obstacle is the regular cap.  But I won't be surprised long-term if Thompson, Green, Curry, and Durant all remain on that team for another round of contracts.

the league changed the luxury tax thresholds to very high levels of tax at lower levels over the cap.  They could keep them all but it will cost them like triple or four times the actual contract value on one of them.  So they may pay Thompson 30 million but will have 100 million plus tax hit to do so.
