I predict the Celtics DO NOT sign Hayward.  According to the rules, he can make more money/years by resigning with the Jazz, who are a playoff team with a number of other good young players.  Hayward has started a family, quality of life is good in Salt Lake.

nobody knows his personal situation and what his mindset is.

I agree....none of us do.

I'll bet CBS and DA know.

and they definitely will be gauging his interest. If we do not get hayward do we target another FA this offseason? Like many have said we do not just want a free agent to have a free agent because we did not get our main guy.  don't need a cap space filler if he does not fit our plans. wait til next year and develop kids.  I am hoping the fact he played for CBS helps us in his decision making.

Danny signs these 1 year helpers, at large money, as possible trade tools. If he does it again, hopefully we can do better than Zeller.

yeah zellar has not been much help.
LET'S GO CELTICS!

Right.  It's just a prediction, but it is based on what I've heard him say about life in Salt Lake City.  Maybe I'm projecting into my shoes, but hey, this is a blog.

Could do a S&T for him so he can get all the money. My prediction is AB and Rozier for him.

No, as of the 2011 CBA (or possibly the one before that?) you can no longer do a sign & trade at terms higher than what the receiving team could offer in an outright FA signing.

So you no longer can have the original team sign the player at 5 years and maximum raises before trading the player to another team.  The terms for a S&T are limited to 4 years and the regular raises that any other team could offer.

The only advantage that S&T transactions can still offer is that they can be used to facilitate the player signing with a team that is not able to get far enough below the cap to offer the contract.  In that case, the original team uses their Bird Rights to sign the contract and trade the player.  In this scenario, the receiving team may have to send out-going salary and they will definitely have to send some sort of incentive (players and/or draft picks) not only for the service of performing the S&T, but also for having to take on any bad salary contracts in the exchange.    The other negative is that current rules can result in the receiving team being 'hard capped', meaning they can lose access to further exceptions such as the MLE.

Players like Hayward are always in the max territory, so it would have to be a very serious injury, or some freak thing like what happened to Bosh. Also, since he has the player option he could always activate it for that fourth year.
Wrong. Players like Hayward are rarely if ever in max territory. What you're observing right now is an artifact of being the best player on the market at times when teams find themselves with unprecedented amount of cap space because of one-time jumps in the the total salary ceiling.

Several years ago, Hayward would have been looking at a Monta Ellis type of deal. Ellis signed for 5 years, $55 million total in 2008. He did that coming off of his age-22 season in which he averaged 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game.

Ellis' potential max was $14.65 million per season, or nearly $100 million over the duration of a five-year contract. He signed for half that -- and has never come close to making as much money again (relative to the cap).

When the cap stops jerking up and returns to its more customary incremental annual increases, I fully expect players like Hayward (and Al Horford, for that matter) will not be worth nearly as much. If Hayward is smart, he won't be leaving (too much) money on the table.

I think that one, there is an expectation now that teams need at least three max guys to win, so teams prepare their cap accordingly. Rookie deals did not jump as high relative to the cap so teams are able to save money there to put towards veterans. Also, now that the large cap jumps will settle down, teams should be spending less and in three years time there will be suitors for a 30 year-old Hayward with cap space. Will they be desirable teams? Maybe, maybe not.

Also, I don't know what GS's cap situation was at the time, but I think Hayward is more valuable than Ellis was back then. Especially in today's game, someone who can shoot 3s, play D, pass, and actually do a little playmaking is very in demand. He has prototypical size and also made the all-star team. Ellis has never been an all-star and is a little undersized.

But yes, you're right that staying with a desperate team such as Utah where he is unquestionably the face of the franchise is safer from a financial standpoint. The point still remains that in the first three years of the deal, there isn't a huge difference between what Boston and Utah can offer. The question is what can he get as a 30 year-old free agent in 2020?

Jaylen has to tighten up his handle and especially jump shot over the summer

Doesnt hurt if he added 10 pounds of muscle

Agree. He needs to develop more hand and forearm strength, prone to having ball slapped out of his hands.

Agree!  He needs to improve his FT% to at least 75%.  There's no excuse for someone with his mechanics to shoot 68.5% (85-124).  If he had made eight more free throws (93-124) he'd have been at 75%.  That's a must.

And yes, 10lbs will help him tremendously.  As much as people say he has "an NBA body" the guy is still pretty slight at 225lbs.  He needs to get up to Jae Crowder level at 235lbs.  But he's only 19 or 20 so he should easily be able to do that.

I love how he improved his finishing at the rim.  He had several great finishes in the last game against the Cavs.  And then he got in the lane and rose up for a fadeaway from about 8 feet away and I thought (he's in the zone, this guy is gonna be good) and he airballed it (or barely grazed the rim).

He's still maybe caught up in the moment too much at times.

I really hope Jaylen leapfrogs Crowder as a starting SF. Crowder is a more than decent player so for JB to get his spot means he's got something special in his sophomore year.

Point taken, but the beauty of it is that, as we saw this year, they are productive playing together, either as the two wings, or with Jaylen as a wing and Jae as a small-ball 4.

Jimmy Butler would not be Jimmy Butler if he were in the 240's. We drafted Jaylen to be a form of Butler/Derozan/Wade

Look at guys like Wade and Butler. Jaylen is much younger and has more muscle and less bf% than both of them in his first year. Crowder is in the 240's and is not the type of player Jaylen is...someone who can be a quick SG ala Butler/Derozan/Wade.

@223lbs and 5.6% bf Jaylen is far ahead of comparable stars. Also look at Jaylen's length: 7' wingspan and 8'8'' standing reach...far superioir to Butler/Derozan even though he is shorter than both of them.

IMO Brown will naturally gain 5-10lbs of lean muscle and stay at a sub 6% bodyfat.

Brown was selected as a SF, not a SG.  I'm not saying he can't play that position, but seriously, do you think his shot will improve that much that he'll be slotted there?  Butler/Derozan/Wade are all SGs so the comparison is not apt.

Also, Jae is listed at 235, not "in the 240s."  Not saying that the numbers couldn't be incorrect but have you seen his weight listed anywhere at that number?

If you say that JB will naturally gain 10lbs of muscle, then great!  That's what I was suggesting too.  Right now I just think he's too thin for folks to be saying "he has an NBA body."  He'll get there, but he's not there yet.

He was 241 at the combine.  I'm fairly sure I saw him listed at 245 last year, because I was curious how he compared to Brown around draft time.  His listing could have been updated.

Not that any of these are truly accurate but I saw Jae at 235 on ESPN.com where Jaylen was listed at 225.

Brown is a SG that can play SF due to his length and strength. He was selected as SG/SF and he absolutely can play SG. Wade/Butler/Derozan are all guys that were bad at 3-point shooting....yet played SG. And yes I do believe it is realistic to say that Jaylen could shoot between 35-39% from 3 (and even better given how quickly he improved before the start of the regular season)

Did you even know Brown is shorter than Butler and Dorozan? But they are SG's with a worse 3-point shot percentage?

Memorize the DX database instead of looking at ESPN for only 2 measurements....weight and height.
