Lets say we keep the pick, Fultz stays, and we move forward with Fultz/Thomas as our starting backcourt.

That likely means that either Bradley or Smart will need to go.  As much as it would pain me to see him go (I'm one of his biggest fans) Bradley probably makes more sense, since his contract is expiring soon and he's likely to demand get more money then is justifiable for a backup guard.

We will also likely need to release Olynyk if we want the cap space to bring in a max salary free agent...and we will need roster space for Yabusele and Zizic.

So assuming we move forward with Thomas, Fultz, Smart, Rozier as our backcourt (I like that rotation).

So out of curiosity, what can we potentially get back in return for a package of Bradley, Olynyk (S&T), Mickey, 2018 Brooklyn 1st?

Assuming Kelly gets around $10M, that adds up to about $19M in salary out.

Do you guys think that could bring back a star?
* Butler ($17M)?
* George ($18M)?
* Melo ($24M)?
* Cousins ($17M)?
* Hayward ($16M)?
* Drummond ($22M)?

If not, then do you think that 2018 1st could get us a nice young big like Derek Favors or Myles Turner?

Do you think that seeing that Brooklyn pick strike gold this year for Boston could give opposing teams a reality check and push up the value of that 2018 pick?

We need to keep fultz. He looks to be a better prospect than both kyrie and wall. He is highly efficient and van shoot from anywhere. Imagine mixing him with IT, or AB? He will attract double teams, maybe james young becomes a beast because of fultz? He will make people around him Better

Okay you had me until James Young. Seriously. Young's days are numbered.

I'm assuming you just just read the title of the threat (and not the actual contents) because my question wasn't about whether to keep Fultz, it was about what we do if we keep Fultz.

More specifically, what could we get for Bradley/Smart + 2018 Brooklyn 1st.

And yeah - James Young is not an NBA player, and he likely never will be.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Obviously it would be great to get something for Kelly, but I just don't know why he would choose to be signed and traded when he can just choose a team of his liking. It really only works if he wants to go to a franchise that is already over the cap. With the cap once again expanding, he will certainly have more options than usual.

I guess Olynyk probably doesn't make a lot of sense, but I image even just the Brooklyn 2018 + Bradley should have strong value on the trade market.

A team like Indiana for example - that could give up George (who has the ability to walk next year anyway) and could build around Bradley, Turner and whoever they get with the 2018 pick (likely top 5).  Could very rapidly expedite their rebuild.

If we could get sufficient interest from Gordon Hayward in free agency, then maybe we could even offer Bradley, Crowder AND the 2018 Brooklyn pick for George.

We could move forward with Thomas, Fultz, Hayward, George, Horford - then I believe we'd be able to use bird rights to re-sign George and Thomas.

Hard to imagine Pacers saying no to that.  They move forward with Bradley, Crowder, Turner and a potential top 5 pick in 2018 - hell of a young core to build around.

Ditto the Bulls for Butler.  Rondo and Wade could very easily both walk this offseason, in which case the Bulls would be holding on to Butler and a bunch of spare parts. Why waste 2 or 3 best years of Butler's career rebuilding?  They could move him, get a trio of very nice assets in return, and start a rebuild.

I feel like moving the 2018 pick makes more sense then keeping it right now.  Bradley/Smart on their own are solid assets, but not valuable enough to bring back a star.  But Bradley/Smart plus 2018 1st could well be valuable enough to get us a star.

I think best thing is to make that move now while the sight of that Brooklyn #1 pick is still fresh in the mind of opposing teams.  Let them dream about what they could achieve with a Brooklyn pick of their very own - and a very nice young starter thrown in for good measure.

Bradley + 2018 Nets pick is a package worth a star talent.

The 2018 Nets pick is fair value for someone like Myles Turner. It would be a major overpay for Favors though. I think Bradley for Favors is a possibility though.

Sort of torn.

I think trading Smart makes more on the court sense if the Celtics take Fultz.   There would be plenty of PG skills on the team with IT, Fultz and Rozier.

AB's outside shot would be more valuable, especially with two guys that can draw the defense.

But the future cost of AB....

With Smart still under his rookie contract he is not going anywhere... Bradley is set to be a free agent and was whining about his contract ever since he signed it... So with Fultz ideally becoming a rich mans Bradley its most likely he is either traded or plays out the final season and moves on.. Also Rozier will be looking for an expanded role, as he deserves one..

I like that list. Based on the other thread, I don't know how easy it would be to land a guy like Hayward via FA. I also think PG would be impossible to land given the ownership issues in Indy. That said, I'd like to revisit the trade for Butler. I think Bradley+Crowder+Rozier and a pair of non-BKN 1sts can do the job.

Melo and Drummond would be interesting too. They're in that 2nd tier of "wants". I don't know what I'd give up for them but definitely not any BKN pick. Plus, they fill a need for a "big" (Melo is practically a 4 now at this stage in his career).

Perhaps you should change your title. You start a thread with 'If we keep Fultz, then demur when a poster tell you we have to keep him. What gives?

What is the future cost of AB, really? He doesn't need to be paid until the dust settles on next years free agency. The C's won't have cap space after that for the foreseeable future regardless of what happens to AB. There are two years of overlap on Horford's contract.

Keep him and pay the bill. The owners will need to spend some money, but it will be worth it. If we get a shot at a max free agent, we move on from some combination of Smart, Rozier and/or Crowder before we look at Avery.

If we get a max guy this off-season and max IT out or close to it, we're gonna be maxed out. I'd peg Avery in the $18m - $20m range.  I don't think the luxury tax bill is worth it.

I'd say trade Avery for a big and try to reach an extension with Marcus Smart. I'm fine with IT/Fultz/Smart being the primary guard rotation. We need to utilize assets to address the frontcourt.
