What is the obsession for trading a phenomenal talent like Fultz? We likely have a franchise player and the 1st thing some fans want to do is ditch him. Barring injury problems, the kid is about as close to can't-miss as you'll ever see.
You know what, I tend to agree with you.
I mean look - we've had multiple guys put up big numbers in college who didn't amount to much. Buddy Hield, Doug McDermott, JJ Reddick, etc.
But the key difference is that all of those guys put up big numbers in their senior years, at the age of 21-22 years old, after 3-4 years college experience. And on top of that all of those guys were just pure scorers who we poor defenders, who had average athleticism, and who didn't really offer much of another dimension to their game.
Fultz for a guard is tall, long, strong, athletic. He's putting up 23/6/6 and shooting 40% from three as an 18 year old freshman. It's extremely rare to see a guy his age put up those kind of numbers while also being a strong defensive player on top of that.
He's probably the most surefire star since Lebron and Durant, and we have him guaranteed for at least the next 4 years, probably 8 - and even at that 8 year mark he'll still only be 26 with upside still to come.
So I can see your point, and I think it's a fair call. It's hard to imagine many (if any) players in the league right now who you'd give that up for.
