From the Celtics perspective it might be perfect. We can draft fultz or Lonzo ball, still keep the second leading scorer in the NBA while the young kid develops and by that time we can part ways with Thomas.

He can still land another huge contract. What's the absolute Max we could pay him over a two-year period that's what we should offer him, if he doesn't want it fine we will trade him.

I think IT would just read that contract and walk out of the Celtics facility and pack his bags

You either keep IT through next year and go for a championship, or you trade him in the off season.
I would never pay IT max money. He can't defend.

I am not 100% sure, but under the CBA rules I don't think that would be possible. I think you can extend a player by giving him a 20% raise on top of his current contract and that doesn't make any sense for him. I also think it has to be at least 3 years long.

You mean giving him $30 million this summer for the next two seasons? Or after he hits free agency?

Barring injuries, IT should be a good player for more than another two years. If you want him past next year, why not pay him for a full contract, then trade him after two years? You should still get decent value for him (or at least its reasonable to think so right now), whereas if you don't sign him you lose him completely, even as just an asset.

As somebody else pointed out, it doesn't appear to be possible to extend Isaiah for anything more than 120% of the salary he will make on the final year of his current deal (i.e. what he will make next season).

There's no way it would make financial sense for Isaiah to do that.

Nope.  Some team out there would be willing to give him a 4 year max deal.  Dude has been underpaid his whole career.  Dude is gonna get his once this contract is up.

No chance. Even if another team isn't offering a full max deal, a couple million below that would still be much better. He will take the guaranteed money since he is drastically underpaid right now.

It's so hard to figure out this thing. Most guys on here don't want him back on a 4 year supermax situation.

I'd give him 99 million over four years and live with that. If he's not happy with those kind of numbers and wanted to leave than so be it.

It looks like we are going to draft a super guard coming up shortly.

I just don't see anything good happening with having Fultz or Ball on the team with IT. Do we really think/expect IT to be happy with his eventual replacement breathing down his neck? I like IT, and personally I'd like to see us trade the pick for Butler or George, if AD were ever available it may be for the #1 pick, but again slim chances. I just don't think it'll turn out too well for the team if IT and one of those 2 guards are on the team.

I think IT has exceptional value...as a 6th man. I love his toughness, his ability to score in bunches, he's a great teammate, and a strong leader too.

In a perfect world, on a team that has a chance to win an NBA championship, he would be one of the highest paid 6th men in the league. I'm all for that signing. 3 years 60 million.

Totaly agree with last 2 posts from JohnBoy and Rosco. IT is a heart and soul of this team. If we pick Fultz or Ball they should be traded for a big fish. With that one, Horford and IT at the helm we will become what we all want us to become.

I'd like to take the risk to build around Smart/Brown/Zizic/Fultz/Ayton or whoever we pick in 2018 (while having strong veterans such as Crowder or Horford) than contend three years around Thomas/Horford/Butler. All our process has been designed to contend 10 years, not three.

If we get a top-two pick, I don't want it traded unless we get Anthony Davis or a similar young star.

Before any of Fultz, Jackson, Ball or Tatum become a player as valuable as IT is right now, 4 years will pass anyway.
I don't get the fear around here.

FWIT, Thomas really wants Fultz in the team.
