Scrap the normal format all together. Have fun with it and just go crazy. Make it for charity and have different spots around the floor worth different amounts of money for different charities. Keep score with money donated rather than points. Have the spots randomly light up when they are active and if they hit the shot then that amount is donated. Make it more like a video game lol. Eh...not exactly really sure but just an idea.
hell yeah. and have the harlem globetrotters play against a team of nba all stars too!!!  ::)

actually, my suggestion to improve the all star game is to cancel it entirely.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Let the winning conference get the home court advantage in the NBA Playoffs finals. That way some of the players would care about the outcome of the game.

only some of the players would care. Scrap it all.

When you have a player like AD breaking Wilt's scoring record when Wilt achieved his in a competitive atmosphere and AD did not is a big joke. Scrap the joke and hip-hop crap and get serious.

I know, that's what i wrote.

But under the right circumstances it could work as a lot of the All Star players are from teams contending for the title (at least in the Western Conference). If you could have guys like LeBron, Curry, Harden, Durant, Kawhi Leonard etc. take the game seriously, then I'm sure that a lot of the other guys would naturally do so too.

All in all, it's a long shot, and I do see your point.

I would exclude the fans from selecting players. In general, fans are clueless or biased to the max. I would add the world vs usa game, maybe some sort of pride or patriotism would kick in. As for the ASW game, you have to get the money involved to motivate them, otherwise they wont risk a thing.

It may also work nowadays to make it into a team of USA NBA all-stars vs International all-stars. The game may be more competitive, get more global attention, and also take care of the issue that foreign players sometimes get skewed fan votes due to support of their home country.

or whoever scores more at the end of 48 minutes.
You mean like every NBA game including the All-star game already does? Not sure I get this 'suggestion'.

Well that's just in the unlikely event that neither team reaches 100 points before 48 minutes. It's only happened twice in ASG history where neither team scores 100 (1953 and 1954 ASG).

If the goal is to reach a specific point total before the other team, I expect there to be some level of defensive intensity, so if neither team can reach 100, it'll come down to whichever team scores more. So at worst, if at the end of 48 minutes neither team reaches 100, I'd hope it's because defense is being played.

Winning conference gets a $5 million trade or signing exception to their teams for that year.

Or, winning conference gets less back to back games on their schedule next year.

How about that?  ;D

The players didn't care who was winning, I dont think changing the mechanics will change that.

Make it a pure 1 on 1 tournament.  You'd see effort then, and still keeps risk of injury super low.

I don't think it would be that entertaining though. I imagine that Team USA would win every single time, just like they do when playing in the Olympics.

Best way to fix an NBA game is to bring back Tim Donaghy ;)

I would offer $1000 to charity for every block or steal, players would feel obligated to track back for a block or to make a play for a steal.

While fundamentaly true, there is a case.
The increase of foreign players has been trending positively for the last 20 years. That could give some boost in talent pool. Now, international players go to the NBA younger and more prepared. That minimizes some risks.
Also Euro coach wouldn't have minutes distribution headache like USA representative. If 12 players are on the roster, the Nikes, the UArmors, the Adidas...basicaly Euros are guaranteed to have better chemistry IMO.
And lastly, you could put some strong young linups like Giannis, Jokić, Dragić, KP and Mills or ([dang] where are those Lithuanian knockdown shooters when you need them) Wiggins/Embiid/Simmons there is talent. Delly would injure somebody in his 5 min stint. Manu would give his 10/15 mins. Big positions are loaded. Guards and wings are harder to find.
Maybe if the rule was american born vs international born. Then you could include Kyrie, KAT. It would make it more even. It is just one game and with such talent on both sides, game could go either way.

I hate everything to do with All-Star games in every sports. The NBA ASG has become particularly embarrassing to watch as a form of basketball entertainment. Simply stop having it and give the players a week of vacation to recharge.
