Off shoot topic from post in last night's game thread.

I say they hire a group of hall of fame trash talkers, and have them roaming the sideline with megaphones.

Other ideas?

Silver finally addressing the pathetic all-star weekend.

Wonder what the motivation will be...
Baseball has HCA regardless of regular season record why can't the NBA do the same.

People are paying for the All-Star weekend. Maybe Silver should fine every players and coaches if they don't put up an entertaining show. Kinda like what Stern did to Pops when he decided to rest his big 3 against Lebron and the Heat.

First thing they need to do is go back to selecting all Stars by their true positions. Positionless basketball has brought us to this point.

I wonder what they'd do. I've seen suggestions like set a point-limit. So that defense is more of an incentive. Like the first team to score 100 wins type thing, or whoever scores more at the end of 48 minutes.

Edit: I also think free throws should be eliminated from all star games. IDK I find free throws in the ASG so drab...

Just talk to the players. Make them understand what you want to happen & just as important what you do not want to happen and why.

What worked in the past?  Go back and watch previous All Star games at a point in basketball history that you think they were the best...compare to current product.  What's missing?

That's the general way to fix most everything in life...the devil is in the details :)

I used to ask the same thing. Maybe the players were just different? I watched the 2001 ASG like 4 times, and maybe there were just better competitors back then. Either that or there was some horrific injury that occurred during an ASG and it discouraged stiff defense.

The players have no incentive to play hard, they just want to avoid injury and have fun.

The solution imo is provide a financial incentive to the winning team and coaches. These guys , once there is money on the line, they play for pride. It won't be playoff atmosphere level, but they will play seriously.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I like a lot of the ideas in this thread. I was coming on to say more of a financial incentive, but I like the point limit idea, no freethrows, even the mega-phone idea, among others.

Great job guys!

You mean like every NBA game including the All-star game already does? Not sure I get this 'suggestion'.

Scrap the normal format all together. Have fun with it and just go crazy. Make it for charity and have different spots around the floor worth different amounts of money for different charities. Keep score with money donated rather than points. Have the spots randomly light up when they are active and if they hit the shot then that amount is donated. Make it more like a video game lol. Eh...not exactly really sure but just an idea.

I kinda feel like this is the only way it would work.  If they'll listen and give a crap.

Should just make it a three on three tourney first team to 7 points moves on. All baskets made count as one point only. Winning teams members win a car each. From the NBA sponsored car manufacturer. Teams get selected by random name draw three days before tourney.

NBA All Star Tourney.

I was thinking of something similar, but there is a lot of history to the game that the league likes to harken back on.  Career All-Star stats etc...The last couple of seasons have made a mockery of that history of collected stats though...So I don't know.

Ive watched 2002 all star game a week ago, and man there's a whole lof of difference. Everyone was defending. Kobe and T-Mac trying to score on each other etc. The highlights were great because you know how hard it was because there's an actual opposition.

I hear you about the history but they don't treat the game as such. All they care about is the selection to the game. And most times it's not about pride but for $. It's a different time.
