At the time of the trade I had a similar thought, but I think Denver was really keying in on Plumlee. Mason is a unique big in that he plays a very similar style to Jokic. Namely, he can facilitate from the high post as well as rebound at a high rate. He can't shoot free throws or really score effectively, but his style of play allows Denver to have 48 minutes a game playing the smae style, which is huge and something that having Nurkic didn't allow. They actually gave up a first with nurkic for Plumlee, which makes me think they really targeted him.
