Quote
“We’re very comfortable with what happened,” Grousbeck said. “We offered a lot for a couple of guys, and we offered all that we were going to offer and it just wasn’t going to happen. Those guys weren’t going to be traded and they weren’t. It’s not problem.

“We figure we’re probably two guys away from being a really, really good team; probably two significant guys away, and if we put all the chips in yesterday on one guy, we’re getting rid of draft pick -- or picks -- and we’re getting rid of free agency this summer, so it’s sort of like one step forward, two steps back. It just didn’t make sense.”

Quote
“Every one of these seasons is different. It’s like a movie and you have a cast of characters and the cast changes a little bit every season,” Grousbeck said. “We’d love to have Isaiah here for a long, long time. He’s a phenomenal player and he loves being here.”

The Celtics stand a strong chance of picking first overall in June’s draft since they own Brooklyn’s first-round pick. Asked whether Thomas’ status would prevent the team from taking a point guard (which the draft’s two prospects play), Grousbeck said the team doesn’t need to decide that now, but suggested it wouldn’t.

“Especially if it’s a very high pick in the draft, you’ve got to draft the best player,” Grousbeck said. “You probably wouldn’t draft for fit as much as just you see if there’s a transformational player that you can have for 10 or 15 years there. If you see a guy like that, you’ve got to make everything else work, I would think.”

Pretty good stuff here from Wyc, and a lot of pretty reasonable stuff.

Yeah, I'd say the Celtics have two needs, Rebounding and #2 scorer, so yes, they are probably two stars away.

It's also justifiable not giving up a ton for one star because this team needs two stars to win a championship, and adding either PG13 or Butler still doesn't get us past Cleveland. But add Zizic, Fultz/Ball and either Hayward/Griffin, and we can get REAL CLOSE.

And I think the C's will give IT a large contract even if they draft a PG this summer, so maybe Bradley and/or Rozier get shopped for other needs.

Thoughts?

I think as long as Hayward doesn't make an All-NBA team, Celtics will get him.

Then they can work on a package for another All-Star, hopefully a big.

They may even be able to do it for Bradley/Crowder/Nets '18. That's a huge package. Love all three of those but sometimes you have to give something o get something. Then they'd be able to keep Smart, Brown, and the '17 pick.

Bring over Yabu and Zizic and grab some vets for the minimum to fill out the bench.

I agree with the one step forward two steps back statement.

Love IT, but still not sure I love max contract over 4 or 5 years IT...

Overall I agree with Wyc and I'm happy we kept our picks.

The first step is to see how far this current roster can go in the playoffs.  It is entirely possible they make the ECF and take a healthy Cleveland to 6 or 7 games.  I'm not saying that is likely, just possible.

That will determine how many acquisition need to happen and which ones they need to be.

I am all aboard the Gordon Hayward train.

Starting to think Wyc is right about being "two stars away".

Will be interesting to see what happens with IT after 2018.

My preference is to keep him past 2018 and build with him as a piece.

I'm sure lots of people would rather not though.

I want to note that he never says "stars".  He says "significant players" but not stars.  There is a difference.  I'd say every star is a significant player, but not every significant player is a star.

Yeah I'd have a hard time calling Horford a star this season though there's an argument there. But he seems to mean guys around that caliber, not Paul George + Griffin or whatever.

Sounds like adding Hayward, Fultz and the Euros will do the trick ;)

Yeah, sorry I guess I should have worded it all better.

But essentially the same thing, two guys who can really help (and provide consistent scoring, defense and/or rebounding)

I wouldn't sign IT long term. I would rather trade him and draft Fultz.

I still think Bradley gets moved.  Something like Bradley, Rozier, and 2018 Celtics 1st for either:

Marquisse Chriss, Barbosa (non-guarenteed), 2018 2nd rd pick.

or

Skal Labissiere, Anthony Tolliver (non-guarenteed), 2018 2nd rd pick.

Waive Olynyk, Zeller, Jerebko, Amir, Green, and whichever non-guarenteed contract you get in the Bradley trade.

Sign either Griffin or Hayward would be the goal.

Draft best player available.

If Hayward signs, go for power forwards with the MLE.  James Johnson, JaMychal Green, or even Amir Johnson?

If Griffin signs, go for shooting guards with the MLE.   Hardaway Jr?, Shabazz Muhammad, Ben McLemore?,  PJ Tucker?
