That's interesting. Most likely it would just be getting him over here in the same sense that Nader is on the Red Claws.
With that said, there could be some value to signing him to a contract this season, and I have wondered if Danny had this in mind when he did not have them submit the letter to the league saying they will not sign with the C's during this league year, and therefore removing their cap holds.
IF Yabu were to sign this year, there would be 2 consequences:
1. (negative) He would burn a year of his rookie contract. Obviously this is bad for the C's.
2. (positive) He would be locked in under the current Rookie scale. If he signs after July 1st, he would have to sign on next years rookie scale which jumps considerably under the new CBA, eating up more cap space for the C's.
So the question is...would Danny give up a year of control of Yabu, just to save some extra space under the cap for this summer (and the following 3 years)?
Another layer of this is that given Yabu's development level, you could argue that the C's would get a better deal on Yabu's second contract by having it come up earlier. But that is a big risk to base any sort of plan around.
Obviously, this is a very unlikely scenario, but I think it is something that a creative GM like Danny would have at least considered knowing that the rookie scale was going to jump in the new CBA.
