Because truthfully, I'm not seeing it.

Especially if his price is really something like 2017 BKN Pick + 2 of Smart/Brown/Bradley/Crowder.

Now if the price was lower, ABSOLUTELY make the deal. But unfortunately it's not (for now).

Now maybe if you have Lopez coming back in the deal, it might push the needle all together. Adding Butler takes us out of the FA Market for max-guys, so take back Lopez as well and fill the "other need" (rebounding and interior defense).

I know he's the second best two way player behind Leonard and IMO he's the 12th best player in the league, but still, I would try again in the summer and see if the Bulls bite on a lower price. Otherwise, Fultz/Ball + FA doesn't sound too shabby either (win-win either way).

He is a piece in the proper direction.

It is not the first trade that gets the Celtics to the top.

But the key is still having the pieces left to make the 2nd trade when it becomes available.

He doesn't.  We would need a lebron or steph level.  He is neither.  He would be an upgrade that would get us to the EcF.  We need another shooter like gallinari to offset Cleveland. Land those two, that might do it.  Still wouldn't get us past golden state

Wouldn't get you past Cleveland unless someone else on that squad goes down. But, it puts you in a better position depending on what you give up, to win a playoff series. Stars get calls, and no matter how anyone wants to slice it that's what makes the difference in playoff games..

Obviously to compete for a title another shoe would have to drop, but this gets you closer.

Butler is a step in the right direction. I don't really understand the "Will player X get us past CLE" argument. Outside of LeBron, there really isn't another player who will single handedly make a team like the C's instant contenders.

Butler is a great fit for the C's. He's versatile, a great defender, can create his own shot, and has that hard nosed, never been handed anything to me attitude that we laud IT4 for. He's the type of player that pushes them to legit ECF contenders. He's a talent upgrade on the roster and he gives a legit size in the backcourt next to IT4.

It would be a step in a series of steps the C's have already taken.

only thing Butler does is make Lebron work on defense, but they could switch lebron onto Johnson or Olynyk.

Cousins would have gotten Boston a lot closer than any other player potentially available, especially when the price would have likely been Brown plus future picks.  Cleveland has no answer for Cousins.  It would have given Boston a decided edge at a position on the court, something no other available player would have done.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Firstoff, the price you list is not necessarily the actual price.

Ive seen reports that the sticking point is Crowder + Nets '17.

Second, I cant convince you its gets us past Cleveland. It probably doesnt. Not this year at least.

No one can.

Jimmy Butler can make it a good fight against Cleveland.

Two years ago, when Butler actually had a supporting cast, he averaged an efficient 20 points a game and was probably the Bulls best player in a season where they put the most credible fright into Lebron James since the Paul George Pacers pushed them to 7.

Butler is a terrific defender having made an all-defense team 3 consecutive years. He can create his own shot (something only Isaiah Thomas does at the moment) and the last time he wasnt on a terrible team, he shot 39% on three-point attempts.

He has gotten better each year and is under long-term team control. He has clashed with his teammates recently and calling out his teammates publicly was disappointing. That said, the guys he has clashed with have all been questionable in their own right. His FO has a bad reputation and Derrick Rose is clearly delusional. The supporting cast he called out sucks.

As for, the guys who love him. 3x champion Dwayne Wade and former Celtics coach Tom Thibodeau.

Guys hes clashed with: Rondo, GarPax, Derrick Rose, Corpse of Joakim Noah, other Chicago Bulls on current awful roster
Guys who sing his praises: Tom Thibodeau, Pau Gasol, Dwayne Wade.

Ill take the second group all day long when Im looking for character references.

They still need to get stronger up front beyond Butler to compete with Cavs. Butler is a nice player but they still need that rim protector Danny says he wants. I expect him to do that by trade deadline, even w/o Butler.

i believe in the term "overrated star". Meaning some player is putting great stats and is considered a star but he doesn't help his team win. Best example of that is Carmelo Anthony. One of the best scoring talents of this generation and he never make his team great.

Similar case with Butler. Bulls don't have too bad roster but he is struggling to get his team in the playoff. He might not be in the playoffs second year in a row, on a weak east conference.

In the past the term stars was used for players who made their teams great. Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, KG, Nowitzki, Iverson.....

Iverson got 76ers to the finals with terrible supporting cast
KG got Minnesota in the playoffs in the strong west for 8 years in a row with bad supporting cast.

Today's stars are overrated i believe, not all of them but most of them. Lebron, Durant, Leonard are not overrated but "stars" like Butler are

Interesting Butler stat, shooting 39% on 3Ps. I've seen him pass up 3P shots this year, and he's not known as a 3P shooter. He's a big steals guy, one of the best all around players in the game, in my view. He, Smart and Bradley would be devastating.

He can get us past Cleveland if we were able to turnaround and trade him for Cousins... oh wait, nevermind.

In all seriousness, I just don't see him adding enough to what we need to overcome Cleveland.
