it appeared the Celtics had enough assets to acquire Cousins. But NBA sources say Boston wasn’t interested for several reasons, including the possibility of having to re-sign the temperamental big man to a $200 million extension when his contract expires after the 2017-18 season.

Quote
The Celtics have the right to swap first-round picks with the league-worst Nets in June’s draft and also have Brooklyn’s pick in 2018. They could have offered either or both of those picks, along with the expiring contract of Amir Johnson and some of their young talent, but Boston was never seriously interested.

He wouldn't have been eligible for the $200m extension after the trade.

So maybe Washburn isn't the most reliable.

Collect ridiculous assets to trade for a superstar player

Unwilling to offer a superstar player a max extension

Correct.  Although he would have been eligible for a $180 million extension, which is still pretty hefty.

Not disagreeing, just saying that if a reporter can't get basic CBA details correct then he shouldn't hold much credibility.

EDIT: I just believe the C's didn't have interest due to his personality issues. If they wanted him, money wouldn't have been an issue (see: AL Horford). I think ownership will pony up for a legit chance at Banner 18.

Cousins has the potential to sink this franchise, give him the 4-5 year max and you more than likely have a 4-5 year headache. He doesn't strike me as the type that once he gets his big dollars will strive for a championship during those 4-5 years.

This just tells me that they don't believe in Cousins.  That's fine.  I'm disappointed, but I get it.

We were in a great position yesterday.  We're still in a great position today.

No he's only lead his team in scoring,  been on the all star team, gone to the olympics and put up with a management group that has no idea how to build around him.  No clearly he just wants to float through and not win a championship ::).  Celtics had everything in place to get him one but ya know, fuxk talent, gotta appease Brad  ::)

He's already gotten big dollars, and has improved his game every season. Don't equate poor anger management with a lack of competitiveness.

So are they willing to do a huge extension to either Butler or George (1-2 years from now)?

Probably yes, but their price will be a lot higher in trade than Cousins was still.

We would've been in the best position today and not just kinda good right now....oh well.

Then you acquire Cousins for Brown and BKN 18 and don't re-sign him after the 2018 season.  Those two playoff runs would be worth it because with Cousins I can't see how Boston isn't in at least the ECF both of those years (if not the Finals or winning).  Cleveland is vulnerable this year both as the 1 seed and in the playoffs given Love's shaky health.  Cleveland can't guard Cousins effectively, which creates a huge matchup problem.  Boston should have gone all in if the price to acquire Cousins was that low.  It really is unacceptable that Boston didn't make the move.

Cousins is a nut.

Didn't want him in the first place, certainly don't want him for $200 million.

Ainge gets no criticism here for passing on this certifiable headache.

Fair point.
